NOZ
Hi all, Sorry that I have been fairly quiet in the last few weeks. I am curntly running a RC-7 center, and have heard so much hype over the Academy. My question is would an Academy be any better as a center? I kow it would probably match my La Scalas better, but the RC-7 is such a monster center, I just love it. Just pondering over a little change, thanks Sean ------------------ NOZ SYSTEM DUAL USAGE ROOM Fronts & Mains: Klipsch La Scalas Center: Klipsch RC-7 Rears: Klipsch RS-7's Projector: Infocus LP350 Screen: Draper Premier 96" x 72" TV: Toshiba 37" DVD: Toshiba SD-3805 Receiver: Harman Kardon AVR 7000 CD: Sony CDP CX250 EQ: Harmon Kardon EQ-8 Sub: Dual SVS Ultras w/ Samson 1000 watt amp http://www.geocities.com/seanshometheatre/
boa12
sean, i'd think it comes down to timbre-match. does the rc-7 seem to be a seamless blend w/ the las. what you really need is another las for center. that's what i dream for one day. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
NOZ
Boa, I'd love that, but the screen comes down to about 16" off the floor, so I have to have it underneath the projector screen. See my website and go right down to he second and third last pic... Thanks for the input. boa12
sean, looks great. why not get an audio-transparent theater screen & put a las behind it? ------------------ My Home Systems Page
boa12
btw, most dvd are the movie soundtracks mixed for speaks behind screens anyway. so then you wouldn't need to use the re-eq function (thx thing) that compensates for this. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
NOZ
Boa, Don't break my heart, I speant $2800 Canadian, for the power up & down screen. I thought about the pull down transparent @ about $600 Can., but I wanted the Dual usage room, where I could have regular TV with surround, then with the flick of a switch full HT for DVD's. I couldn't find a transparent power one, sob... Oh well, the things we have to worry about.. boa12
sean, man's gotta have his priorities. think about it- marginal sound of a las center vs marginal cost for screen upgrade & las center. heck maybe that screen would even be ok w/ a las center behind it. up to you. oh, btw have you seen dillon's thread in this section? ------------------ My Home Systems Page
NOZ
Mick, Yea, I know the Las would probably blow right through he screen anyways, but I have to keep in mind the regular everyday Toshiba behind the screen, uniformity and all.. Just want to know if the Academy can keep up. boa12
btw, just noticed what looks like rf-7 there too. if you're looking for a match to those the rc-7 is it. are you looking for a music match center for your las? if for your rf, no the academy would not be a better match. i wouldn't bother w/ it for the las & 2-channel. hope that covers it. why don't you have those rf-7 in your signature? ------------------ My Home Systems Page
boa12
oh, & you might want to angle the front of the rc-7 up so the horn's aimed at your ears in the listening position. hope you don't mind suggestions. at least they're free. & what's that on top of the tv? an rc-3? anyway, great set-up. congrats! wish i had that room. ------------------ My Home Systems Page This message has been edited by boa12 on 09-10-2002 at 09:23 PM
NOZ
Just sold the RF-7's, found the Las alot more colourful, flavourful, you know... That's why I am wondering about the Academy for a center... boa12
ok. thanks, i was getting confused. yes, then the academy would be a much better timbre/voice match. then again. you could put the tv on top of a lascala... sorry, i'll leave you alone now. ------------------ My Home Systems Page
NOZ
Sorry Mick, Just been replying, those pics are from about a month or two ago, lots of shifting and placement changes. DillonW
What a big screen you have! Sweet setup. Seeing all that space available makes me jealous! I would mount a La Scala center, over your TV, tilting down to the listener. Nothing designated as a center channel can hang with those La Scalas. Shoot, you have enough front stage for La Scala mains, center, and front effects. Of course if you've gone that far...."Somebody stop me..." It just doesn't end. Only two chairs in the room? Is the other one for the dog? Maybe not, he looked pretty happy on the floor by his Klipsch friends.
DillonW
PS, I was using one of my ChorusIIs as a center before I tried another La Scala. The Chorus was MUCH better than the KLF-C7, but can't touch another La Scala. For the price of an Academy you'd be close to getting another La Scala. Just remember why you chose the Scalas over the RF-7s. Sorry, don't mean to play devil's advocate, but the difference is HUGE!
NOZ
Hehe, thanks Dillon, wait until you see the pics of the SVS ontop of the La Scalas... Will get some more seating when the funds become available, maybe some carpet too... ------------------ NOZ SYSTEM DUAL USAGE ROOM Fronts & Mains: Klipsch La Scalas Center: Klipsch RC-7 Rears: Klipsch RS-7's Projector: Infocus LP350 Screen: Draper Premier 96" x 72" TV: Toshiba 37" DVD: Toshiba SD-3805 Receiver: Harman Kardon AVR 7000 CD: Sony CDP CX250 EQ: Harmon Kardon EQ-8 Sub: Dual SVS Ultras w/ Samson 1000 watt amp http://www.geocities.com/seanshometheatre/
NOZ
Dillon, Another La Scala? God forbid if I move again. Two of them is enough, oh well, guess I won't move then. On another note the RC-7 kicks ***, I know it's no Las though. Is the academy that good though? I've heard raves about it, but does that come from people who just don't have a clue? DillonW
I can't speak to the Academy, or the RC-7 for that matter, I have never heard them. Again, I don't mean to play devil's advocate, but here are my observations. There is timbre matching to be considered first, and an Academy may do an adequate job there.... But, until I wired the La Scala at center, I never knew there was that much PUNCH in the center channel. I had just associated it as the dialog channel. Timbre aside, the C7 just was not capable of delivering the impact. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Academy will be able to either. From the work that you have put into your HT room, you are obviously more than a casual HT hobbyist. What sub did you have before your Ultras? After having heard them, would you ever go back? I know you have other issues to consider, this is just my opinion.
j-malotky
Sean Dillon is correct, to make you Heritage HT shine you need something closer to your LAS than an RC7 or Academy. Obviously the best solution is an identical speaker, but if that is not possible, mids and highs are most important. I too did not want a perf screen, so I plan to mount a k77 and k400 over the screen and a pair of K22 woofers under the screen. In your case, you could put all under the screen right where your RC7 sits now. Kind of like how mine is shown in the odds and mods now, just need a cabinet to contain the 400 and 77, mine are just sitting in the open. NOZ
Dillon, I had an older velodyne V1012, it couldn't even keep up near the Las. Anyways, have only had the SVS on top of the Las since last night, I am very impressed. JM, Great idea, I'll get looking for the stuff on e-bay, or elsewhere. The hock shops around me never get anything remotely close to quality items.
