Avia HT DVD

Ok, so I have been away from the boards for a while, but I have been swamped both at work, and working at home on stuff I didn't get done at work. But I did get a chance to listen to edster's K-horn/Moondog system a few weeks ago. I'll post a review of that experience when I get a chance to breathe.

But, my question is about the Avia DVD. I have a copy and was using it this weekend to calibrate my system above and beyond to the on-board test signals from my Denon AVR-4800. Since the Denon automatically sets the volume to 0dB, what should I do with the Avia when it is playing? If I set to 0dB, I can't be in the same room. I know how to remotely tune the individual speaker levels, but with Avia disc, I am supposed to tune to 85dB vice 75dB for the Denon. Anyone have experience with Denon/Avia please help me out here. Thanks.

Rob - Good to see you again. Was thinking about you the other day. This is my favorite season in New England.

I have a Denon and use the AVIA disk. Just turn the volume on the Denon down after you enter setup mode to a level more reasonable, where you can get 85db out of the main speakers at 0db on their channel settings using the AVIA test tone. For me, that is like -10 on my Denon 3300. Then, that setting becomes your "new" 00 point (or reference level) on the Denon. It goes to 0 because that makes it easy to remember as a reference point, and is geared to those without highly efficient Klipsch speakers, who probably need to go to 0 to get 85db out of them.

Then, whenever you're watching a movie and want reference volume, just set the Denon to that new reference point you identified during calibration. Should give you 105db peaks at your listening position.

Good luck!
