Third party replacement amplifier for Promedia 2.1 Subwoofer?

Welcome.

Spending money on 3rd party amps, which might work, would be my last choice.  Used ProMedia 2.1s are readily available on eBay for less than $100.  New can be had for ~$150.

That said,  if bored, I would be curious to open one up to see if some inexpensive SURE class-D chip amp from Parts Express could be used. Unless the thrill of the DIY repair floats your boat, your time ought to be worth more than the cost of replacing the whole system.

I know this thread is old, but it is as good a place as any to share my experience.  I got my Promedia 2.1 from Costco and paid a whopping $70 for the system.  Probably the best $70 I've ever spent.  There is just nothing that beats this for double (triple??) that little of an investment.  Unfortunately, Klipsch really needs to put a couple more bucks into the amp.   The amp board on this unit couldn't be much simpler, but they are failing left and right.  They don't sell a replacement board so you have to buy the whole sub which just isn't worth it as you can get a whole new system on Amazon for $115.  So when my amp died, I looked at Parts Express and Amazon for a replacement.  Clearly, kits with the TPA3116 was the way to go.  You can get a 2.1 amp for under $30 and another $20 for a switching power supply if you don't have one lying around.  Don't try and use the existing transformer-it just won't work well with these Class D amps.  Don't skimp on the voltage of your PSU either.  the closer to 24V the better.  Don't bother with a 12V.  It will work, just not well.

While $50 is certainly worth it to refurb the system, I decided to spend about $15 more and get this external amp that included a 24V PSU:  https://a.co/d/bDEv2uB.  Getting this had several benefits:  1) reduced my cable runs 2) kept the controls by my monitor 3) required very little system modification and 4) got the amp out of the sub should I smoke this one too.  As far as mods, I kept it super simple.  I yanked the power cord out of the sub and put a 16awg speaker cable in its place.  Yes, I could have wired this through the existing speaker terminals, but I wanted to dump the power cord and that was just as good a hole as any and even reused the existing strain relief.  I did put some connectors on the inside so I could disconnect the cable from the driver if I needed to.  That's it!  It took me all of 30 minutes to do the mods.  The new amp definitely sounds better than the old one and has a few more controls to tune the sound.

So if you are out there saying "Hey, that amp cost as much as the speakers did" while that's true, it still did save me $50 if I decided to get a new system.  Better yet, it kept me from spending even more as it squelched my desire to upgrade even more to something bigger, badder, funnier.

Hope this helps someone.
