Does anyone have any experience with this unit? I was shopping around for DVD Players to add to my Xmas want list and if this this is all it's cracked up to be it seems like a bargain. SACD, Pro. Scan, plays CDR's and MP3's...for a little over $200. Also, when your dvd player and your receiver both have DTS and dolby digital decoders which one does the work? Thanks in advance fellas...

Depending on how you set it up, either one. Usually, you go with the one whose DAC's are better (uh, I think).

That is supposed to be a pretty good unit. You might try asking your question in the HT forum, just down the list.

I have a 2 year old Sony DVD, 5-disk--can't remember all the letters, but the model is "660." I urge you to buy an extended warranty. My DVD went out at 1 year, and Sony (as well as other service shops) wanted $150+ to work on it, which was about half of what I paid, and only about $90 below replacement cost. To their credit, Sony eventually replaced the laser, and all I paid was shipping to Sony. That deal, however, took 6 weeks and lots of talking!

I am happy with the Sony DVD and my other Sony equipment, which now makes up a second HT in the bedroom. However, I think an extended warranty on almost anything with no more than a 1 year warranty makes sense. Seems to me that BestBuy has one of the better long-term plans.

I have this DVD/SACD player and I'd like to tell you I'm pleased... I'm actually on my third unit.

First unit was dead out of the box purchased on-line directly from Sony. Paid $200 and received 5 DVD's and 3 magazine subscriptions for free. Returned dead unit within 30 days to Sony and got a complete refund, no questions asked. No left channel audio output.

Purchased the second unit from soundcity.com for $185 plus $15 shipping. Unit was dead out of the box. No Subwoofer 5.1 analog output. Thought about trying a different make or model, but this unit was so fully loaded with features (including SACD format) for the price that I let soundcity.com replace it. They covered all the cost of shipping the new unit/returning the old unit.

Sonically, this is an outstanding unit... again, it is unbelievably loaded for $200. It works well with my other Sony components (much more reliable Sony ES top-of-the-line receiver and Sony ES 400 disc CD changer). Am hoping it will hold up.

Short version: Outstanding value and features; less than desirable reliability. Buy at your own risk!
