KrustKrustofferson
Hi folks, I am new to the forums! I am looking for some help and expertise if possible I am building a Klipsch RP system for my living room setup. The room dimensions are 12x15 feet, so it's not the biggest room. To start, I bought a second-hand pair of RP-600m bookshelves for L/R and a RP-504c for the centre (no sub just yet but I will be getting 1 or 2 depending). I have been wanting to add surround speakers to make it a 5.x channel setup, and depending on how that goes (and if you think my room allows) I may increase to 7.x or even atmos down the line. Use case will be approx. 80% home theatre and 20% music. I am wondering if you think I should pick up smaller bookshelves for the surrounds such RP-500m/400m or possibly RP-502s/402s, or would it make more sense to upgrade the L/R to something like RP-6000f/8000f towers, and then move the 600m to the surrounds? My fear is that in a room of this size, that setup might be too much or overpowering in some way? As you can see in the layout image, the surrounds would be pretty close to the seating area (about 3/4 feet from ears), would this be a problem with something like the large 600m being too close? From what I can tell, bookshelf speakers like the 600m should be perfectly good for L/R in this setup, and when I add a sub (or two) there would be no major benefit to floor standing equivalents. With that in mind, perhaps a set of smaller side surrounds for now would be the best move, and then consider adding rear surrounds down the line if I feel the need? I have kind of reached a stage of information paralysis, and am not sure of the best way to proceed or the best speakers to choose, so any guidance or advice would be fantastic! wuzzzer
Modern surround systems should use direct radiating speakers like the 600M instead of wide dispersion like the 502S. In a 5.1 setup your surrounds should be to your side or very slightly behind you facing you. A 7.1 setup adds rear surrounds behind you. Yes I had seen that directional speakers were preferred for the likes of atmos. However, I am slightly concerned that the distance of 3/4 feet to ears would be uncomfortable as the speaker would be firing pretty close compared to the 10/11 feet of the fronts - do you think this would be an issue? Just turn down their output levels.

I have an option to pick up some RP-150m bookshelves for a good price, which are obviously the previous generation, do you think these might be suitable as side surrounds? I guess I am trying to make sure that something like the RP-502s isn't a safer move! Thanks again.
wuzzzer
If you don’t ever plan to do Atmos you might want to get something like the 502S. If you do plan on Atmos at some point go with any RP bookshelf model.
