built-in floorstanding speakers

I am just starting to build a home theater set-up, but listen to a lot of music as well. I will be getting the Reference -7 speaker system, but my spouse is concerned about the size of the floorstanding speakers. Is there a way they can be built-in to not interfere with the sound? If not, what size of space can semi-enclose them without interfering with sound production?

Keith - The challenge with enclosing these speakers is that they are rear-ported, so they really need some breathing room to sound right. You would probably need to leave more room than you (or your wife) would want to around them, but I'll let others speak more specifically about that.

I believe the new models in the Reference line, below the RF-7, may be front ported to help alleviate this restriction. They are not in the dealers yet, but were announced at CES.

The new model that would probably be best suited for what you're looking for is the RB-75. It is a large, front-ported bookshelf speaker that is made to be built-in. Using these for your fronts, and maybe even your center channel along with a good subwoofer and surrounds would meet your needs. Here is a link to a picture. I've also copy and pasted some of the news release concerning these speakers.

"Klipsch Audio Technologies has announced four new bookshelf speakers in its award-winning Reference Series, including the RB-75, which brings the technology of the Series-leading RF-7 floorstanding speaker to a bookshelf model for the first time. ...

Were especially proud of the RB-75, says Paul Jacobs, COO of the Klipsch Worldwide Products Group. Its a great solution for people who want the ultimate power and detail provided by the RF-7, but cant accommodate a floorstanding speaker. Coupled with a subwoofer, the RB-75 bookshelf speaker approaches the performance of the RF-7 flagship floorstander.

All of the new bookshelf speakers have woofers featuring a redesigned version of Klipschs distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic cone that is even stronger than before. Cerametallic cones are made of anodized aluminum. The anodizing process converts their inner and outer surfaces to ceramic, greatly increasing rigidity. The result is a stiff, light diaphragm with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofers operating range. Driving these cones are large, video-shielded magnets and high-temperature, long-excursion voice coils, for high efficiency and deep, powerful, articulate bass without breakup or distortion. The woofers rigid, low-resonance cast-polymer frames are far superior to conventional stamped-steel baskets, maintaining perfect voice-coil alignment while minimizing flux leakage.

The RB-75 uses a proprietary, high-performance compression tweeter with a 1.75-inch titanium dome diaphragm and an enormous 14-ounce video-shielded magnet. Among tweeters designed for home loudspeakers, it is unrivaled for clarity, efficiency, power handling, freedom from distortion, and reliability. ...

As in all Reference Series speakers, the tweeters are coupled to Klipsch square Tractrix® horns with 90 degree horizontal by 60 degree vertical dispersion. The horns increase sensitivity while minimizing the room interactions that blur the sonic detail and imaging of conventional speakers. In the new models, the horns are molded into the front baffles for reduced diffraction and a cleaner, more stylish appearance. Grilles attach with magnetic pins, which make them both easier to handle and more resistant to breakage than conventional attachment pins.

The crossover networks are constructed using extremely high-quality components, including bandwidth-balanced Monster Cable® wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and air-core inductors, to ensure proper driver blending and no degradation of the incoming signals. Inputs are via bi-wireable binding posts.

A key design goal for all the new Reference Series speakers was installation flexibility. The RB-75's have front-opening, optimally flared ports to facilitate placement in cabinets or against walls. ...

Woofer diameters are 8-inches for the RB-75. Tentative U.S. MSRPs for these models are $1,200/pr. They are expected to be available in March 2003 (with international distribution following 30 days later). Final pricing will be announced in February 2003. "
