Sansui quad receivers?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone would share their views on these big 'ole quads.

I'm sitting here cleaning up a QR-4500 that I picked up friday along with a pair of JBL Lancer77s for $75.

Both appear to be mint. :)

As i'm hosing down the pots in this thing, i'm realizing what amazing attention to detail that was put into its' circut layout.

Shielding, cable routing, isolated circuts, double shielded tuner, heavy weight switches and faders.

All sorts of good stuff in here.

I'm fairly impressed.

Any insight or warnings about these unit would be appreciated.

John.

Audio,

I am assuming the receiver is Pre 1980? My Army roomate had one in 73-it was powerful. If so Sansui made some great equip.... If youre not an audio electrician-I Highly recommend you take it to get fully checked out...well worth the peace of mind.... Audioclassic.com sells units like this all the time and they fetch a good price........... Congrats to you.

Bill- Yeah, it's circa '75.

No tech needed, though.2.gif

I've been learning to repair this old SS equipment for a little while now.

I can check the basics and replace leaky filter caps, broken switches, blown lamps, ect...

If there is something I can't figure out, then it'll have to wait until I learn how to fix it.

I'm currently in the process of teaching myself how to properly align tuners.

Unfortunately, my anceint Bell/Howell scope is about hit.

So, i'm kinda in a holding pattern until I can muster up a better one.

Anyone have a decent scope they would want to part with for a reasonable price?

Fini, Thanks.

What can I say about these Lancers?

Hmmmm....

The actually are quite interesting.

When I went to look at them, the owner had the placed in the typical vertical orientation.

They didn't sound too bad hooked to his Nak SA-4.

After closer inspection, I realized they were designed for horizontal placement.

Very cool. 9.gif

He didn't have a place to set them up properly, so I had to wait until I got home to really do some critical listening.

Being that this was a holiday weekend and all, I really could spend any time with them, until last night and this morning.

I've got them in my livivng room, set up on stands (horizontally), in front of my RF7/KSF10.5s.

I'm running a Pioneer SX-525 on them currently, with other completely different pieces to follow.

My first impression was nothing notable.

I toggled to tweeter attenuator, on the speaker, a few times and let my Adcom GFA-555 warm up a bit.

Within about an hour those puppies were sounding fine as wine.

I left the adcom hooked up to them and let it play all night at low levels. (As to not wake the children)

This morning after walking dogs, I sat down and put on a little Jimmy Buffet.

Not too shabby.

But a touch grainy..

As to be expected with these 555s

I then hooked up my Pioneer SA-7500II and was quite happy.

They have quite some depth of character,

But, no real low end impact.

Very full sound with just a smidgen of chestiness.

The overall soundstage is wide and accurate.

Instrument placement was excellent.

Comparable to my Paradigm Monitor 9 and Optimus Mach 3s. (No flames, please)

After 3 cups of coffee and 2 trips to the bathroom, I decided to try a few of these smaller Pioneers that I love so dear.

The SX-525 has been on for about an hour and they sound nice.

I'm thinking of hooking the Jolida up to them, next.

They are definately not efficeint, so i'm kinda curious as to how it will perform with them.

John.
