RS-7s and wall mounting

My current home theater room is less than ideal, mostly because of a large walk through on the rear right side exactly where speakers ought to be. Currently I have bookshelfs on stands (barstools actually) but I was hoping to replace those with RS-7s.

I do have space above the walkthrough to mount speakers on the wall. However this would put them fairly close to the ceiling. How much is the absolute minimum space between the top of the speaker and ceiling? Could I put cloth or something up there to help absorb echo? Also, the interior is plaster (old house) should I be worried about mounting speakers to it?

I would not worry so much about the plaster as long as you can find a stud to put your screws into. If you can't find a stud, go to your local hardware store and buy a stud finder. They are simple to use. If this still is not working for you, I would recommend getting someone in that is fairly knowledgable on house construction as you may need to rip away some plaster to find out how the house was built. you really want those RS7s secured good on the wall as they are not light.

As far as height, the standard seems to be to have your surrounds at least 6" down from the ceiling. Even the Klipsch manuals show this to be the case.

WOW! Very nice! I really like that interior, very classy.

Dunno man but you sure don't want that RS7 falling as it will most likely ruin your day. I'm sure you have got to know someone who can come over and help you find an secure way to mount it. 1.gif

There would be little sonic difference between 6" space from the speaker to the ceiling and 0". The dispersion pattern of the horn on the surround speakers (and on most Klipsch speakers) is 90 degrees wide (two combine to yield 180 degrees horizontal) and 60 degrees high. Thus, unless the surround speaker is VERY far from the ceiling, there is going to be reflected energy - this is not a problem. The greater challenge is to properly mount the speakers on your plaster walls without damaging them. (the walls that is)

I had this wrong. It was not the Klipsch manual but rather one of my Harman Kardon manuals.

But based on what Bob said, it may not matter for the RS7s.
