avaddict
HELP!! Having a problem with one of my rp-3 speakers making a humming noise when turned off (standby) I only hear the noise from one speaker, usually at night when all is quiet. The salesman at Tweeter said it was electrical noise, but I would tend to disagree because it is just the one speaker??!! Maybe I should take Tweeter advice and get Monster power conditioner??? Maybe call 800-klipsch??? ************************* RP-3 Mains RC-3 Center Sony ES receiver Sony dvp-c650d cd/dvd Sony 36" Wega
boa12
ava, i had the same thing when i had my rp-3 (on both actually). bobg/klipsch said that some of the rp-3 did have defective amps making that noise. i just took 'em back & got rp-5 instead but u may want to at least have their service and/or klipsch take a look. ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver(stereo power amp for rf-3) Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! avaddict
Talked to the people at Tweeter and I'm going to trade in the RP-3's for the RP-5's. I think the extra $400 will be well spent!!
boa12
ava, i just replied to your other post before i saw this. i agree. marginally, that was the best $400 i ever spent. but see the other post for my further transgressions i'd see how the rp-5 go 1st. they're great speaks considering sound, shielding & space limitations. keep in mind you in effect get 2 in-line(most likely) subs combined for some pretty good bass output. much more i thought w/ the 5s than the 3s. ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver(stereo power amp for rf-3) Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! T2K
avaddict, did you use the supplied adapter on your power cords to float the ground? Are your speakers plugged into a different circuit than your receiver?Tried a RatShack ground loop isolater? Keith

Everything is plugged into the same surge protector/outlet. Think I should try something?

boa12
rock on ava! glad u like em. & getting em for another 400 rather than 500 is a great deal from an authorized dealer. now just try not to get that upgrade bug 2soon & do be careful. i did blow a subwoof on one of my rp-5, but i can get a lil excessive w/ the bass. they should be pretty loud w/ the output all the way down to flat w/ the 2 powered subs in line & all. here's a ? for u & keith. do u have the sub drivers pointed away or toward center? i had them away & they sounded fine. but an installer at the house once said they should be pointed in. doesn't sound right to me though so I never tried it. guess it would also depend whether the speaks are in from the corners or not. ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver(stereo power amp for rf-3) Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! avaddict
boa12 & Keith Excellent question about pointing the subs in or out??!! I also have a Boston 10" sub that I dragged into the scene. I have heard stories of bass cancelation problems, but it seems to rock the house just fine! I hooked the LFE ins on the RP-5s to the sub outs on the receiver and ran speaker wire with ban. plugs to the binding posts. Thanks for the help. (Boston sub also connected to sub out on receiver) btw, should RP-5s be set to large or small??? I would think small would give better effect??!! boa12
ava, i had the rp-5 hooked like you (well w/o a sep sub anyway) & used strands of wire to keep the high & low speaker posts connected. yea i would think small would be best since high inludes the midbass on up w/ a cut-off of 90hz. but really u shouldn't hear much or any dif as the posts are connected anyway. u know w/ the above hook-up you're really like bi-amping. pretty cool huh? so then where are your rp & are the subs pointing in or out? that sounds kinda forward, sorry ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver(stereo power amp for rf-3) Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! T2K
Well, I've got mine pointed out.But then again with four of them and two subs, don't really need the bass coupling. One is in a corner pointed away from corner towards rear sub, which is under desk, the other rear is pointed away from adjacent wall, and front L/R on either side of RP are pointed away from TV.Front sub placed against side wall at front.Have probably the worst room scenerio possible.Room 16X20 with one long wall(side)open to dining room and kitchen and foyer.Total area open about 42X30'.Sounds just as good on screen porch as inside.Oh yeah, yesterday had on some music and my lovely wife and I were sitting on screen porch sipping some sweetea and counting the butterflies when my neighbor opened her back door and just stared over at us for a moment and, without saying anything, closed the door.I told my wife that probably the music wasn't loud enough and she probably wanted me to turn it up some.So I gladly obliged. That's just the kind of guy I am.We counted 64 butterflies.
