We tipped the scales with a bunch of records a while back on a nice digital "NSF" restaurant food scale (certified by the County of Los Angeles no less!) and the results were . . .

Old, flat-edge deep groove 12" Blue Notes were the HEAVIEST of all records in the closet--a whopping 220 grams! The round-edge deep-grooves (various labels) varied between 180 and 200 grams. When the deep-grooves went away in the 1960's the vinyl trimmed down to about 150 grams. And then the dreaded 1970's rolled around and most pressings were about 120 grams, but there were some PARTICULARLY skimpy examples from RCA and Contemporary that weighed in at LESS than 100 grams.

Best sonics? All other things being equal, the earlier pressings (150-220 gram) were the best. My opinion is that the heavy ones sound better more because of WHEN they were pressed and NOT because they are thicker!

Less chance for a thick slab to deform--that's about the only advantage I can think of for BRAND NEW pressings.
