Questions on Scott 299-b tube amp......

Hi all, I have been lurking here and recently purchased a pair of Scotts. A 299-B amp and a 310-D tuner. They were purchased in 1961 and were used up until 1965. I got these from a friend and have all the original paperwork on them, even a letter that the previous owner wrote to Scott about using (1) 16 ohm speaker and (1) 8 ohm speaker. They actually sent a hand written response to the owner.

Anyway, my friends grandfather owned them and died in 1965. The Scotts were never used since.

I usually hang out at AudioAslyum using the same moniker. I followed some advice and used the "light-bulb trick" to slowly power them up( I did not have a working variac).

My question is on one channel the 7189 telefunken tube plates are glowing orange(I know this is bad). The amp works and the sound is fine except when the amp is idle I get static and hissing type sounds from the channel with the tubes glowing. As I get an input signal the static/crackling/hiss sound goes away. The static/hiss sounds stay at the same level even with the vol. turned all the way down. I do have the schematics for both, but do not have the test equipment to adjust the AC or DC adjustments. I do have a volt meter to check the bias. I have not swapped the 7189s side to side to see, but I did buy a pair of new Sovtek EL84's to try and get the same sounds from the amp, but no glowing plates.

Any help would be nice.

Tha amp has all telefunken 7189 outputs and 2 telefunken phase inverter tubes. The 12ax7s are all black plate Scott labeled except for one which is a telefunken. The 310-D tuner works fine and has all the original 1961 date code Scott and Telefunken tubes. The face plates do not have one scratch and are mint. They do not have covers. If there is any interest I will probably sell them together as a pair. I already own a sherwood S-5500II and S-3000III amp and tuner. I will have some pics this weekend. I would rather someone here buy them and have the amp checked out by someone like Craig of NOS Valves then to sell them on ebay.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to see what you all think.

Hell, don't bother selling them on Ebay. You'll probably find lots of takers at fair market prices here. They sound very minty! Might be interested myself. I know Greg Roberts is looking for one for his dad.

The last two pics of the 310-D and 299-B is all the included paperwork for each unit. There even is a (what appears to me) to be a hand typed letter singed by Herman Hosmer Scott. Also an extra light bulb for the tuner. For each unit there is:

Owners manual

Full size original Scott drawing for a mounting template.

Schematics

Service manuals

Gold warranty papers

Here is a list of the brands of tubes in each:

299-B

12AX7 (3) are labeled Scott made in USA and have black ribbed plates

(1) Telefunken diamond on base

7189 (4) Telefunken 7189 diamond on base

6U8 (2) Telefunken diamond on base

5AR4 (1) GE

310-D

12AU7 (1) Telefunken diamond on base

All the rest are label Scott made in USA.

I would like to sell the pair together.

The first person to email me can have the pair for $450 plus actual shipoping and cost for packing materials.

As I said the tuner works fine and sounds great. The amp has NO hum but needs to be checked by a tech as my pervious post states the problems above.

Thanks,

-Dave

Oh yeah, there are a couple of marks on the 299-B balance control (on the panel)that the original owner put on. I did not try to clean it off. I think the reason he did this was he was using it with some homemade Karlson cabinets and one was 16 ohm and the other was 8. There is a reply from Scott to him about that the amp would be fine running this configuration.
