DTLongo
Those interested in a possible Stereophile/Klipschorn review may wish to look at considered thoughts posted here not long ago on my 2003 Klipschorns. Do a search under the two-channel forum for "DTLongo" + "Klipschorns" back to October 1, 2003. You will find two review strings in October initiated by me and one initiated in January 2004 by GaryMD. That "wall of sound" effect that Gary describes is no exaggeration. P.S. I'm still looking for a tube amp. jbsl
DTLongo that was a very good review! You are much more articulate in describing the way the Khorns sound than I could. I am waiting on a pair of 2004 La Scalas and I may have to refer people to your review instead of even trying to write a review. Like you I do not have tube gear. I own 2 Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pros that I run with a Luxman C300 preamp and a NAD C540 CD player. It sounds very good with my KLF 20's and will sound even better with the LS. I am out of money so the tube gear will have to wait till later this year or begining of 2005. I have never heard tube gear but the SM 70 Pros for SS amps have a wonderful sound. I will buy a tube preamp first and probably won't buy tube amp until June 2005. Woodog
You'll have to search for 'Tom 2003 Khorns/Tubes Audition ' to get Gary's review with the Fisher amp. No wonder you're looking for a tube amp now forrest
DTLongo
FYI, I've decided to go with new for a tube amp. I have just ordered a Jolida JD 102B amp from the manufacturer. It has rave reviews here and there on the 'Net, e.g., at audioreview.com. 20 wpc and it should really make my Khorns sing. Tom
jbsl
Do you have a tube preamp or is the Jolida JD 102B a Integrated amp? What was the total cost? My stereo budget for this year is blown since I went with new La Scalas and a pair of Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pros amps. I could have bought used ones but I wanted to try the new upgrades to the crossovers and if no one buys new Heritage then they will stop making them. avman
jbsl: are you interested in selling one or a pair of the klf-20's? i am interested in making a center channel out of one. t.i.a. avman.
DTLongo
The Jolida JD 102B is a small integrated tube amp using two 12AX7's as preamps and two matched pairs of EL84's for the power amplification. You can see a picture of it on their website, www.jolida.com. It has no tone controls, so I asked them to mod it so I can use a graphic equalizer if desired. The amp cost $580 plus $50 for the mod plus shipping and 5% MD sales tax since both they and I are in MD, all up probably about $675. Just about bottom of the market for a new tube amp. In fact the 102B is the "baby" in Jolida's line. They expect to ship it o/a February 26 after doing the mod and testing it all out.
jbsl
I sent DeanG a email about how much he would charge to do a upgrade on the crossovers on my KLF 20's. I was going to put the 20s in my bedroom or as my rear speaker in my HT and was curious about how they would sound with the upgraded crossovers. I had not thought about selling them but if I do not do the upgrade I will consider selling them. IF I do sell them you will be the first one I will offer them to. I would only sell both of them but I cannot gaurantee that I will sell them. I just read a review of DTLongo 2003 Khorns with a Fisher tube integrated amp that has me thinking about getting into tube gear. My La Scalas will not be ready until begining of March or maybe not. The shipping date has been moved back twice already. Jan 16 was the first shipping date then Feb 6 and now March 4. So I would keep looking for a pair or single KLF 20 and if you find a good deal then I would go for it. By the time I get my LS I should know if I will sell the 20's. How far are you from Austin, TX? Shipping on these would not be cheap? I think they are 89 pounds each but not sure. I bought these in 2001 so I would have to find out what they are worth now and work out a deal with you. I am going to Orange Texas in late march so it might be cheaper to met me in Orange than pay shipping fees. So keep looking and if you have not found any by mid march send me an email and I can let you know what I am going to do. There is a small pencil size hole on a grill but that is the only cosmetic I know of. Xman
avman
thanks for the reply- i am in new orleans, so shipping would not be too expensive. keep me in mind, should you want to sell them. anyone else interested in selling klf-20's, or splitting a pair, please let me know. thanks, avman. jbsl
It turns out I am going to Alabama after Orange Texas so if I sell them we could met as I go through NO. I am looking into getting a Jolida amp so I could use extra cash. I don't know when I will get my La Scalas, maybe mid March or early May. If you can wait that long I am willing to sell them to you. Send me an email and we can get on the phone and work out details. Xman
JBryan
Tom, Where is Ocean Pines, MD? If its anywhere near Baltimore (Towson) and you want to hear a few amps on Khorns, you're certainly invited to stop by some time and we can play. I have several PP amps including Dynaco, Rogue & McIntosh and a few SET amps (845, 6C33, 300b, EL84, 2A3, 45 and a 10Y is on the way). We can listen to them through different preamps so you can get an idea of the characteristics of various tubes (6SN7, 12AX,U&T7, 6922, 6P5, 27, 76, etc.). I can even put a few pieces of SS gear in the mix as a reference. If they're interested, maybe we can get a few of the other Klipschters like in the area like GaryMD and Klipschfoot to join us and bring some of their gear - sort of like a meeting of the MD chapter of Klipschfolk. Drop me a note if this sounds feasible and I'll start to make arrangements. Have fun -Bryan

While I have very little moveable gear (we can discuss), you and others have plenty to play with. Thanks for the idea! Larry
garymd
Bryan, You can count me in. I have lots of movable gear I could bring. Keep me posted with the details. BTW - Ocean Pines is right outside of Ocean City. Not too close for Tom.
garymd
Also, Steven (Sknopa ?) may want to join us. He's been itching to hear some heritage/tubes. He's a couple hours away but may want to come anyway.
DTLongo
JBryan - thank you for the invite. Alas, Baltimore/Towson is a bit of a haul from Ocean Pines. which is on the seacoast ca. five miles inland from Ocean City, MD. But if you or other Klipschters are heading out to a few days at the beach at O.C. anyway, give me some advance notice and stop by. In another week or so I should have my '03 Khorns up and running with the new Jolida tube amp I have just ordered, and (hopefully) the combo should be quite something. JBryan
Sorry to hear Tom but it looks like there's a few others here that may have an interest. I know Gary suggested a gear meet a few months ago but scheduling never panned out and he ended up inviting us over one at a time. It was a lot of fun and I think it'd be great to put some faces to the avatars. For the others, I propose a weekend as the most convenient time. Anyone interested please send me a note with the best weekend coming up and I'll coordinate an afternoon/evening that best suits everyone. Let's do this sooner than later as I'm moving out a good portion of this stuff in the next few months. Thanks for the interest and I hope to hear from everyone soon. Have fun -Bryan
garymd
Bryan, Other than next weekend, I'm free. Just let me know when to arrive! Beforehand we can discuss what gear to bring. I'll have available my zebrawood heresys if anyone is interested in seeing them, the MkIIIs I just bought from Craig with the Marantz 7C preamp and my fisher X-100 integrated. These are all easy to transport. Add the sony 555ES SACD player to that list.
LarryC
Bryan, All my upcoming weekends are available, for a couple of months at least. I would prefer having Sundays free, but will gladly accommodate. Larry
