Pics: Klipschorn modded and refinished

Hello,

after changing the midhorn i needed a new top. A woodworker did it for me to my plans. I intended to add a grill cloth in front of the midhorn, but my wife likes this look. I'm glad with that, because it saves me additionaly work.

For asthetics i decided to move the tweeter between bass bin and midhorn. I flush mounted the tweeter in a simple way. No Z-brackets, the tweeter is only moved through a hole from backwards.

The ugly PVC-film on the bass bin, please see pic of the old finish in the next post, was replaced with a plate of birch plywood (as used for the top).

I hope you like so.

Bernd

Way to go.

I too put my tweeter below my 311-90 midrange horn. The tweeter is much nicer sounding when your sitting down. My horn is larger then yours and the tweeter would have been way too high. I think others would like the sound difference if they reveresed the tweeter and mid. horn on the stock Klipschorn.

What horn and driver are you using?

Hello Q-Man,

i'm using for the midrange the K-55M with an Electro Voice SM-120A Midhorn. The Crossover is an slighly modified AA-network. There i added by recommendation of forum member djk a resistor and a cap.

A Question for you: How is the polarity of your tweeter?

Hello,

for tweeter installation there is nothing to dissamble or reassemble at the tweeter. The hole for the tweeter has exactly the height of it and the width is a bit smaller, so that there is enough wood on each side to screw it in. As the tweeter magnet is taller than the height of the hole, you mount it from back. Move first one side of the tweeter from back through the hole, then the other, then center the tweeter and fix it with screws.

The woodworker did a good job, so that you see no gap, only when you have a very close look upon it.

I hope my description of tweeter installation was clear?

Bernd,

I am not using the K-55 or K-77 I'm using other drivers with a custom designed network. I do have my midrange driver wired out of phase or with the polarity reversed. I do this because the driver has about 2db more output at it's low frequency limit this way.

I do believe that Klipsch also does this in some of their networks for the same reason. It might be the woofer, but I don't remember.

Q-Man, i read with great interest your posts, where you described your modifications. I would very like to hear such a system.

Interesting, that you also changed polarity, probably for another reason. I will tell my reason even when i blame here because people think, i did a mistake with the whole mod. But i'm generally so pleased with these Electro-Voice horns, that i will never go back.

I reversed polarity because i noticed a cancellation of frequencies from the tweeter. I believe i got some interferences. But i'm wondering why. Before i constructed the top section, i placed the midhorn and the tweeter laying on the top of the bass bin. I listened carefully for weeks, that all sounded right. Later, when i mounted all in the top section, i got this effect. I heard it while playing music.

Because i have no test equipment, only my ears, i did a test with a self made CD containing various test tones. With this CD i heard the tones from 6000 to 8000 Hz only very quiet. After changing the polarity of the tweeter it sounded right again.

I have no clue, why this could be. Maybe some experts can explain here please.

But the most important thing is, now it sounds and looks good.

Hello JMON,

I usually listen at medium levels of estimated 95 dB (0,5 Watts from amp into the horns). My listening position is about 12' from the horns. My favorite music program is Frank Zappa and Primus, rock, metal, industrial and electronic music, rather jazz rock.

With the stock klipschorns i often found the mids (vocals, guitars) too loud, too harsh. The directivity too was more a christmas tree: Off the center position the mids falled off.

The modded Klipschorns brought a big improvement here. I really like a good presence in the mids more than heavy bass or highs, but the K-400 horn was too much for my favor.
