drewzter
Does bi-wiring (not bi-amping) drop the receiver/amp's impedance like hooking up 2 sets of speakers to one output? ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! drewzter
Thanks, boa... as a follow-up, how does the receiver/amp's wattage get split when bi-wiring? Am I to assume that if I have a 100 w/ch amp, that when I bi-wire, 50 watts will go to the woofer and 50 to the mid & tweeter? ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! boa12
drew, no it won't split the amp power like that. it's like adding more a lil more resistance. so it may sap a lil more current from the amp, but should be fine w/ your yammy. maybe someone else can get into the real electronic technicals (?) ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnect & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D 5-disk cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics SL-1950 turntable/AT LS500 cartridge Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! drewzter
I think I'm confusing bi-wiring w/ bi-amping; it's all getting muddled... I'm definitely going to do it if the impedance doesn't drop. I could have done it years ago - had no idea it was so easy. My dbx's are ready for it - nothing to remove but a jumper... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! WMcD
As you point out, this is an easy mod and is not going to hurt anything. Do observe the polarity so that you don't inadvertently wire the treble and bass out of phase. I have not seen a real justification for this. My guess that someone reasons the current drawn by the woofer causes a voltage drop in a feed line, and somehow this effects the signal to the tweeter. Therefore, it is better to have a separate feed line to the tweeter. I don't buy it. But there is no harm. Gil
drewzter
separating the feeds will produce a cleaner sound just because of the physics involved, but i think we'd see a bigger difference in bi-Amping, not just bi-wiring - just like in cars. many cars are bi-, tri-, even quad- and quintuple-amped these days, and the sound is cleaner - the difference being most obvious at high levels. one day i'll bi-amp, but for now, i'll bi-wire... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
