vandec54
Hello All, thank you in advance for your responses. I am going to be upgrading my TV portion of my Home Theater soon. Some of the units i have been looking at don't allow me to place the center speaker on top of the TV like i currently have it. Question: Does placing the center speaker very near the floor (12 inches or less) effect the sound quality? If so, how much? I have been looking at posted pics of home theaters and I have noticed that many people have decided (probably by default) to place the center speaker close to the floor on a lower shelf of the tv stand. How does this sound?
MrMcGoo
Re: Center channel on or near the floor. If you can aim the center upward towrd the listener's ears, then the sound is degraded only a bit. If it is not angled upward, the sound is likely to be terrible. I recommend the center be placed above the TV if at all possible. Darren
I agree with Bill - go above if you can, but definitely angle it up if you can't. Can you build a shelf above the tv? Even if it's a little back from the TV screen, you can play with your delay settings to compensate.
colterphoto1
I've got my RC& (buy the BIGGEST BADDEST center speaker you can afford- you won't be sorry) on the floor under my 35" Sony. If possible, put it on some type of stand or blocks so it's a close to monitor as possible (don't worry about magnets, it's shielded), and angle it so it is aimed towards listeners ears. This keeps early reflections off the floor which is very important for clear distinct dialog. If the floor is hard, consider placing a rug in front of the center speaker to further dampen early reflections. Here's the greatest FORUM tip I've ever heard. To aim your speaker, place a Laser pointer on the top of cabinet (may have to tape it in place) and adjust so the light is aimed where your ears would be- DO NOT look into the laser obviously. j-malotky
When I built my custom Heritage center, I played with drivers above and below my screen. I ended up mounting my squawker and tweeter over the screen angled down to the sweet spot. Over the screen made it sound like the sound was comming from the subjects on the screen, moreso than below. At this summers Indy trip, we were able to see behind a screen, The theater we visited mount there center tweeter and squaker in the top 1/4 of the screen.
