Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.I've come to only one decision,i'm going to take my time.

MDeneen--I think your last piece of advice was probably the soundest "stay around here in the 2 channel forum".

Maybe i can then be able to then make a better informed choice about what my needs are.Now if i may i'll give a little back,take a listen to Nickelback if you hav"nt already.I,d recommend the 'Silver side up' cd,a real treat(IMO).Again thanx, John.

This is perfect.

FOR EXAMPLE

I made a recent purchase of a Vintage AMPEX tube preamp.

I sent it to a reputable tech 3 weeks ago that I have used before several times.

I have a power amp (PWM design from LEOK) but really not another one( let alone a tube power amp).

There are a few options for upgrades to the preamp that may be employed before an upgreade.

BUT

I am really in no hurry.

I may hear it wioth a Dynaco or a Scott or a VRD or a Motorola or Magnavox.

What I really want to know is...

Is it a cool phono section in the preamp?

AMPEX made microphone preamps and LP cutting lathes; do they engineer a good phono circuit?

I expect they do.

But I will most likely take 3-5 months for a trust of my evaluation skills to post an opinion.

i'm going to take my time.
