DAX616
I recently listened to 311's "beautiful disaster". At moderatly loud volume I hear a woofer slap it sounds odd. The base other wise sounds fine on other selections. I haver a Hafler 220 and a 110 preamp( Hafler as well). I use a bbe 882i sonic maximizer. I have 3amp fuses at the output so I should'nt pass 70 watts per channel. Could this selection use tones approaching 40Hz or below? Is this indicitive of a problem with the actual woofer? I have 1973 k horns.
DrWho
If you can, listen to the CD on a pair of headphones or on another system (your car or pc) and see if the bass slap is on the recording. If it's not, then I would try bypassing your sonic maximizer and if that doens't fix it, and you don't think it's your amp or preamp, then you've got a problem with your woofer. What does it sound like? Is it a loud clacking sound? almost like something mechanical is banging around? Or is it more like the sound of moving air? DAX616
It's like an unhealthy box sound, paper slap not a crack. Base is fine otherwise and quite healthy on other selections.I will troubleshoot as you suggest, thanks
Frzninvt
Those woofers are 31 years old, time to pull them and take a look. You could get them reconed or get brand new ones from Klipsch parts for ~$129 each. I would reconce or replace them in pairs, don't do just the one giving you issues. DAX616
Where do I find new woofers? or parts for Khorn's in general?
Frzninvt
You can call Klipsch Parts 1-800-KLIPSCH and ask for a pair K-33E's. If you want to save a few $$$ you can remove them and wait a few weeks to have them reconed for about $65-$70 apiece at Simply Speakers in FL or an equivalently skilled reconing shop. Bob Crites from here on the forum also may have some K-33E's available. Check with him if you like.
Dylanl
Bob Crites is currently reworking woofers. I have two that he is testing right now. I may be looking to get rid of these.
