dougdrake
Hey gang - Doing a cosmetic restoration on my Fisher integrated tube amp. Seems the best thing to clean up the chassis is Mother's Billet Polish. There is black lettering on the chassis (connector labels, tube labels by the sockets, etc...). Can this stuff (billet polish) be used and not remove that lettering? Anyone have any experience cleaning up a chassis with this kind of lettering on it? Thanks in advance - Doug
Thoriated_Tiger
Try it in an inconspicous place first (if possible.) I cleaned up my Stereo 70 with Mother's Metal (the blue stuff in a jar), and it didnt' do anything untoward to the silkscreen lettering. The 70 was nickel-plate, fwiw. It took a lot of doing, but it went from dull/hazy to nice n' shiny in about 3 passes. The first 2 left the rags so black no amount of washing got rid of it. Thanks in advance - Doug ---------------- AVOID the lettering. Use Q-Tips or equivalent to work up as closely to it as you can and still maintain control. You have NO WAY to KNOW the condition of the lettering beyond visual appearance. Don't polish it unless you are prepared to have it replaced or to live without it. scott0527
On most vintage gear, polishing with any type of cleaner is going to take the lettering off with it. Oddly enough, that Dynaco chassis lettering can stand up to some reasonable polishing with Fitz, Mass or other metal polish. Even testing on one area can give you false hope. Some areas the lettering can hold on stronger than others. Having said that, I've never cleaned any of the Fishers with the plated chassis so I can't say first hand what will happen. Just be very very careful.
