D-MAN
The Dayton 15 is a very good match. That would be my choice for a 8 Ohmn woofer and the price is right. However, even though it can handle more wattage, it COSTS MORE than a new Klipsch K33E. So unless you NEED the increased power handling, I would STILL recommend the K33E. ooteedee
D-Man: (or anyone) Any comments on some of these other crossovers? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=294-326 http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=290-
D-MAN
The Peavey xover is a little too low on the tweeter (2500Hz). I would go with the Eminence 500Hz or the Dayton 375Hz based on price. It really depends on the horn/driver combo that you are using. DM
Marvel
The Eminence only costs about $46. If you had the amps, you could get an electronic crossover and play with the freq. until you got the sound you liked. Marvel
ooteedee
A colleague of mine, who built a SpeakerLab K-Horn kit in 1979, donated/Christmas gift $100 for the building of the LaScala. I am torn. $80 of crossover? 1/3 of the cost for 2 decent woofers? 100 bucks worth of midrange? What's best?
ooteedee
Marvel: I was just thinking of that question and I was going to post it as a topic. In this digital age where are the fully adjustable crossovers? So I cound crossover at 457.256hz for the woofer or something
Duke Spinner
electronic crossover .. Cool .... get a Crown D-60 for the horn amp ... don't forget to save a 'nother 700-800$ for this stuff ...
ooteedee
This past Summer I put in a few bids (and lost) for some Crown DC300's and DC150's. But you need a preamp. And It was getting pricey. But I was getting ahead of myself back then. Will have to do with what I got. (Maybe my Dad will give me his Dynakit Tube Amp!) Realized I had to start with the speakers. Plenty used speakers around...but expensive to ship. That's how I got to the FrankenScala idea. Found the plans...knew I could do it... and there they sit. I tested the speakers more tonight. They DO actually kick out the jams brothers and sisters. Just need a little tweaking. So far the woofer has held it's ground with some heavy drum and bass music. Marvel
I believe a stereo 3-way (or 2 way) dbx unit is around $180. http://www.zzounds.com/item--DBX234 You could get a dbx Drive Rack studio version, totally programmable 2x3, 2x4, 2x6, with delays and compression, eq -- $400. http://www.zzounds.com/item--DBXDRSTUDIO If you have the amps available, these would allow fine tuning until you get what you want. ooteedee
Hmmmm.....pretty expensive stuff. I guess I've got to keep reminding myself....that these beasts are going to live....in the Barn. Better keep a low profile in case someone ever decides to take them while I'm not looking. I guess I can live with a decent amp with some EQ on it. I've tested more today. I guess I can finally say what I've wanted to say about the FrankenScala's.... IT'S ALIVE! After I fire these up out in the Barn ....I could expect the townspeople to march on the homestead with torches, and pitchforks!
