forte IIs and Marantz 2230 receiver?

i,

I'm a newbie who just bought a pair of Forte IIs off eBay that I'm hooking up to an old Marantz 2230 in my office at the university where I teach and wondered in I should now invest in a different amp. The only other component is a 6-CD magazine Pioneer player, so I'm not interested in anything beyond two channels. Perhaps what I have is fine, but I've been reading posts from those who recommend tube amps, integrated amps, etc. to get the most out of the Forte IIs. I'm also wondering about speaker wires, but refuse to invest much $$ in high end wires.

Grateful for any input.

Rick

Welcome to the forum Rick,

Nothing wrong with the 2230, it is a high quality unit, if you are happy with the sound there is no reason to consider an "upgrade". If you are unhappy with the sound then we can suggest some alternatives. mention listening preferences, budget and what you don´t like about the current setup. warm regards, tony

I'm with sunnysal, keep the Marantz! Few SS receivers of the era (HK twin power, Rotel) receive as much respect as the Marantz. I've driven my KG'4's with a Marantz 2220b and later my ChorusII's via a Marantz 2385. These are almost worst case mismatch scenarios because the KG's need higher power and the Chorus need a "sweet first watt" with their high sensitivity.

Having said that, both setups sounded great and never failed to impress guest listeners! If your ears tell you it's good, believe your ears. IMHO, the 2230 is a good match for the efficient Fortes. Also bear in mind that old Marantz watts are REAL, useable watts, don't be fooled by the 30 watt rating.

I would keep the Marantz until I added more Klipsch speakers perhaps for HT. When I bought my Yamaha 7.1 receiver, I brought my KG4's out of retirement as surrounds. The Yammie drives them all quite musically with floor shaking power to spare.

Short version, if it sounds good to you, keep the Marantz and save your money for other stuff (more Klipsch, HT receiver). Two channel Klipsch Heritage is sweet, but Heritage HT is amazing!

Don't put a lot of money into wire. There are quite a few testimonies on this forum that component upgrades to Klipsch crossovers (Forte included) offer terrific bang for the buck. Having done this to my KG4's, I agree. My ChorusII's are awaiting time for me to do the same to them.

DeanG is a specialist in the Forte crossover upgrade, I get the impression that his customers think it is some of the best audio money they have ever spent.
