Upstairs Downstairs -- need a crossover?

Recommended Posts

How do crossovers work? I'm moving from a two story home to a ranch style, and I'm going to combine the upstairs and downstairs sound systems. Both are stereo with separates. How do I hook up a preamp to the two power amps I have? I'll have a B&K PT3 preamp and a 140-watt B&K power amp pushing KG5.2 Klipsches and an Adcom 60-watt power amp pushing old EV's I've had re-done with cones and crossovers.

Is there a particular brand I should look for, and can I get a good used one on eBay?

Thank you!

If you are interested I have two Niles DPS-1's for sale.

The DPS-1 allows you to hook up two different amplifier sources to one set of speakers, or conversely hook the output of a single two channel amp to two different speaker pairs.

I bought these when I decided to get into home theater and was EXTREMELY dissapointed by the sound quality of the Denon 1804 AVR I bought as compaired to the same speakers when driven by my Carver or B&K amps.

However, after about two weeks I dumped the Denon and upgraded to a B&K Ref 50 pre/pro and added a couple more B&K two channel amps. So, no longer any need to change amps to listen to two channel.2.gif

One DPS-1 is new in the box, never even opened. The other was used for about two weeks. I believe they retail for about $90.00 ea. I'll sell the NIB for $60.00 and the two week old one for $50.00 (plus shipping) if anyone is interested.

I've got an Adcom speaker switch--

Is it possible to use one preamp and two power amps in the same system? That's my question. I want to use one power amp for the front speakers and one for the rears, using the one source going through a shared preamp. Would a amplifier switch accojplish this?

Or, do I want to do this? How do you wire it-Thanks!!!
