jtack
I have my dvd player hooked to my receiver via optical cable and my satelite box hooked to my receiver via digital coax. With my satelite box I can get dolby digital surround but for some reason when playing dvds (that are 5.1 dolby digital) my receiver wont go to the dolby digital setting. Instead is says that it is receiving a PCM signal which I though was for cd's and LD's???? I have tried adjusting my dvd settings, but when I do it gives me dolby 2.1 and 3.1???? anybody have any ideas?
Smokem
Did you go into the DVD Player menu? That is where the setting are normally. I can choose Dolby Digital, DTS or both.
gcoker
Yes you need to set the output on your DVD player from PCM to Dolby Digital.
Amdek
Some players call it bitstream, this is in the players menu system, not a DVD menu.
johnyholiday
you might try doing all optical, or all coax, avr might switch one off, when the other is used
jtack
i had the optical going from my dvd player to my receiver first and it did not work, then i hooked up the coax digital cable from my sattelite to my reciever and it worked. when i go to the dvd's movie menu and select dolby digital 5.1 surround, then go to the dvd player menu it says that the program is in dolby digital 2.0 and has a picture of two speakers. the movie is shark tale two and says on the back that it encoded for 5.1 dolby digital. when i press my dvd surround button it toggles through choices like tvs standard, tvs night, tvs dynamic, and off. but no matter what I put it on i am not able to select the dolby digital feature on my reciever. I can put it on pro logic but not dolby digital? one more thing that might help...my dvd player display shows dolby digital lit up like its decoding???? anybody know where i can get a manual for this thing...sony.com does not have it listed int their products anymore... thanks for all your help! sfogg
"one more thing that might help...my dvd player display shows dolby digital lit up like its decoding????" It is, but it is converting it to PCM because that is how the player is setup. Eject your DVD then try the various menu or setup buttons on your remote. One of them will bring up the DVD players setup menu. As was posted find the setting for the digital output and chance it from PCM to DD or Bitstream. Smokem
I guess it is safe to say that the newer even less expensive DVD players will decode DD and DTS quite easily due to newer technology.
gcoker
Thst's true. I don;t know how old your DVD player is but keep in mind Dolby Digital also represents 2.0, 4.0 it's not always 5.1. But use your DVD remote and find the setup menue on your DVD and check the output settings.
