kentmjohnson
I just finished the in-wall wiring of my home theater system and was 5 ft short on one of the rear surround speakers. I have a 5ft piece I could splice onto it to make it work but I am pretty anal when it comes to running a clean system. So how bad would it be to do that? I would prefer not to have to buy another 100ft spool of monster cable for 5 feet but definitely will if its not a great idea. Thanks for the help! dragonfyr
No problem! Simply properly solder the wires using a good silver based solder (re: Parts Express) and cover with a bit of shrink tubing and you should be good to go!
Steve_L
Kent, not a problem to splice. Make sure it's a good mechanical and electrical connection, and then solder as suggested and it will be fine. There will be no increased electrical resistance or impedance. Make sure the individual wires have good insulation from each other and from any completely cover the final connection with either electrical tape or shrink wrap. I'm sure Monster Cable will give you a different answer. LOL!!
Zealot125
On a side note about wire, I have about 100 feet of unused cat5 cable from my networking duties and was wondering whether this is a valid option for speaker wire?

billyjoe72
Iron woods... I peeked at that website. Some of those pictures are beautiful. As for the connections...I say splice away. You'll never hear a difference with it connected the way they told you above. Billyjoe
kentmjohnson
Thanks for all your replies. I will solder it today and drop it in the wall. They are insulating the room now so I am glad it's ok to splice. Thanks again.
