iPod Nano

Oh my goodness! Have you seen the new iPod. I guess I will

have to keep up tradition and buy one haha. Will it replace my

regular iPod and iPod Shuffle all at the same time? Me thinks

yes... Since it is flash based, no hard drive crashes and way

better battery life when compared to the regular iPod. Rumor has

it that we will have 20-60gb secure digital cards in the next few years

(compact flash too I am sure)... Imagine a 60gb iPod the size of a

pocket business card holder! I figure within the next four

years... :)

i said regular iPod not iPod mini (in regards to the battery life). :-)

Average person only has 150 songs on their mp3 player so 4gb is way

above what the average needs. I have over 120gb's of music on my

computer, no iPod will fit what I want. I got the shuffle after

my 40gb iPod got sick and I don't think I have gone two consecutive

days without its 1gb of music!

Just saw it this morning on cnn.com. Definatley slick design. While it

wouldn't hold my full MP3 collection, I wouldn't be concerned over it.

I'm more interested in a small size for portability. And with USB

and/or Firewire interfaces, it doesn't take long to empty and refill an

MP3 player w/ more music.

That said, there are 2 things I don't care for about the IPods. First

being forced to use ITunes, and second having to have a separate

partition for data storage. This bothers me as I do like to use my MP3

player as a portable hard drive. I'm more a fan of the Creative

players at the moment. I have a 5GB with FM. PC just sees it as an external drive. No

need for special software, and music & data can exist on the same

partition.

I'm not trying to belittle the IPod at all, Apple is definatley ahead

of the competition here as far as size & asthetics. I just think

that changing those 2 things would attract a lot more buyers, including

myself.

Full marks for design - but other than that I really dont get the whole iPod thing. My phone (iMate iJam in the US - I think - its called a Qtek S100 over here) takes SD cards (currently upto 2 Gb - although I have a 1 gig and a 512 Mb).

It plays MP3 and the WMA formats. It also plays video - hell it records video (and sound) - both in MP4 format as well as displaying pictures on a far larger screen than any iPod.

Add in the fact it is a phone, an organiser, has pocket excel and word, a powerpoint viewer, a PDF viewer, an internet browser, email and who knows how many other functions.

Of course the PC sees it as a hard disk - and there is no pre-allocating of disk space - just use the space available as you see fit.

All of that in a form factor about the size of an iPod mini.

So what is so great about the iPod?

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but for me I think it is great that I can carry my entire 520+ CD collection in my pocket no matter where I go. I can listen to any CD I want at the gym, I can listen to any CD in the car, without having to carry around 500 CDs, or fumble through them. 1-2 Gigs isn't enough for me.

For what it's worth, the phone that you describe isn't anything I'd invest in, doesn't appeal to me at all. I use my phone to make phone calls and that's it. So to each his own.

I agree on the phone thing. While it is a cool marketable feature to have an MP3 player in a phone, you'd drain the battery so fast using it as such that you'd hardly be able to make a full day's worth of calls without recharging the thing once or twice!

I personally only use my iPod for plane trips, because I've never been one (even back in the Walkman and Discman days) to walk around the streets listening to music. I have to know my surroundings and know what's going on at all times. Plus, you can potentially miss some very funny conversations. And the gym I go to daily plays pretty damn good music as it is, so I don't need an MP3 player there either.

Plus, even on the plane, I can only store one of my 20GB "playlists" on. It's not about storing your ENTIRE music collection, just what you want to listen to at that particular time/day. I guess my big problem is that I rip and download all my music at 320kbps.

Because nothing less will suffice.
