nicholtl
A "slow jam" is a ballad, usually referring to the R&B genre, although it's used nowadays to mean pop, rock, hiphop, etc.

grog
If it sounds good then I like it no matter what they call it. So of my favorite music is by those who seem to cross into different types of music. A good example is Ray Charles. He is Blues, Jazz, Country, Gospel and Rock. I really like good Jazz and I am crazy about Herb Alpert. If you look at the following list of some of the CD's I own it will give you an idea. Somethimes I feel like listening to Mozart... other times Rammstein will fill the bill. 10,000 Maniacs Aaron Tippin Ace of Base Adam And The Ants Adam Makowicz Al Hirt Al Jarreau Alabama Alan Jackson Andreas Vollenweider Antonin Dvorák Barry White Beach Boys Beatles Blondie Blues Traveler Brahms, Johannes Cher Chicago Chopin Clannad Cream Crosby, Stills & Nash Cusco Cyndi Lauper Dean Martin Deep Purple Delfonics Depeche Mode Diamond Rio Dionne Warwick Dmitri Shostakovich DOC GIBBS & PICANTE' Dread Zeppelin Duran Duran Dusty Springfield Earth Wind & Fire Electric Light Orchestra Elton John Elvis Presley Enigma Enya Erasure Eric Clapton Eurythmics Fabulous Thunderbirds Fine Young Cannibals Fleetwood Mac Frank Sinatra Frank Zappa Future Sound of London Garbage Genesis George Harrison George Strait GINGER BAKER Go gos Graeme Edge Band Grover Washington Henry Mancini Herb Alpert Human League Humble Pie Jack Jones Jackie Gleason Janet Jackson Jefferson Airplane Jethro Tull Jimi Hendrix Jo dee Messina Joan Jett Joe Cocker Joe Diffie Joe Nichols Journey Justin Hayward & John Lodge KC And The Sunshine Band Kenny Chesney King Crimson Kraftwerk Led Zeppelin Lionel Richie Lisa Marie Presley Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam Loreena Mckennitt Ludwig van Beethoven Madness Madonna Máire Brennan Marvin Gaye Mc Hammer Miles Davis Moby Moody Blues Neil Diamond No Doubt Patty Loveless Paul Oakenfold Pet Shop Boys Phil Collins Pink Floyd PM Dawn Quad-City Dj's Queen Rammstein Randy Travis Ray Charles REM Rick James Ringo Starr Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass Roxette Roxy Music Runa Pacha Santana Savage Garden Shania Twain Spirit Starship Steppenwolf Steve Miller Band Sting Stray Cats Sugar Ray The Clash The Commitments The Drifters The Temptations The Cardigans The Cars The Doors The Eagles The Mavericks The Mothers of Invention The Outfield The Police Thompson Twins Toby Keith Tom Jones Trace Adkins Traffic u2 Vince Gill Wes Montgomery Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Yo-Yo Ma If my ears like it then I like it! Steve_L
Hmmm..... the longer I live the more different kinds of music I enjoy. Of course I really love what is sometimes known as classic rock... high school grad of 1968 and all.. so I gotta love that stuff. Let's put it this way I've seen Crosby Stills Nash and Young a number of times. Rock and Roll, (not all, but much) is by definition "regulation motorcycle music" so I gotta love that. The music of that mid/late 60s and early 70s was all just so fabulous. From 10 Years After and the Who, Moody Blues, Byrds, Jethro Tull, Traffic, Beatles, Stones, Tommy James and the Shondells, Santana, Grateful Dead, America, Neil Young, The Band.. and on and on and on... I'm a closet folkie.. well, not really, I guess I've pretty much admitted it to this fine group of fellow music lovers. My favorites in this genre are Tom Rush, Joni Mitchell, Jamie Brockett (Legend of the USS Titanic) cult member, Arlo, Aztec Two Step, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, some of today's generation too. I love jazz. Not smooth jazz, my real love in this area is the quartets and quintets mainly from the 50s. Miles, Trane, Hancock, Silver, Brubeck, Tyner, Shorter, Jimmy Smith, ..and dozens of others and todays great artist in the same vein, Michael Brecker, Joshua Redmond, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. Gotta love the blues. I loved the younger BB King (Live at Cook County Jail era circa 1971) Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray, Clapton, JJ Cale, Bonnie Raitt, J Giels, Thorogood. I know th elist goes on here too, but you get my drift. I even like a tad small bit of Country... Vince Gill, the Bellamy Brothers, Brooks and Dunn. Little Bluegrass, gotta love Alison Krauss and Union Station! I just hang around here to pick up new stuff from youse guyz that help me head of in another direction. Some pretty eclectic music lovers out here with huge libraries and knowledge. I've picked up some real great finds reading posts from many of you. Thanks!! nuclearay
I'm with ya on the bass! I love breakbeats, Oldschool rap. Grew up in FLA so bass was a fairly heavy scene. I also love metal: from Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, to Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, etc. FLA also had a big death metal scene too (not too sure why) but I love Cannible Corpse, Deicide, etc. If it had a big phat guitar riff I probably tried to learn it at some point. Jazz: mostly bop and earlier Classical: almost all Baroque. Electronica: you name it. I am listening to Kruder and Dorfmeisters "sessions" as I type. I can appreciate just about anything if it is "good" in my opinion[] I find that I just don't have enough to listen to.
skonopa
Just wondering what kind of music do you people listen to. First and foremost, I am very much a metal head. Mostly old-school (Black Sabbath, Judist Priest, etc), as well as Power Metal (Stratovarious, Kamelot, Hammerfall, Edguy, Sonata Arctica), and Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Aryeon) as well as some more straight up progressive rock such as Pain of Salvation and Porcupine Tree (I wish I could go to that show coming up on the 23rd at the 9:30 club, but it does not look like it is going to happen). I do also like some ambiance as well as electronica (especially the more epic symphonic variety). David Arkenstone has some really good stuff in this regard, especially his Quest of the Dream Warrior album. I also listen to a lot of the "older" rock (although I can clearly remember when this was still new) that I grew up with such as Styx, The Cars, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush, and so forth. I can also certainly listen to and enjoy classical music, especially some of the more exciting and powerful pieces. I just flat out cannot stand rap, hip-hop and the like. I also just do not care for (although I can tolerate it, for the most part) country/western. I can listen to and tolerate jazz, but I find it boring for the most part. Like it is said on Impellitteri's System X album - "Give me my rock and roll heros!". And as I also am fond of saying - "Play it Hard! Play it LOUD!" Guest Webmaster
Power Metal and Prog Metal. My favorites right now are Symphony X, Iron Maiden (always), Adagio, Kamelot, Heavenly, Demons & Wizards, Spiral Architect, John Arch, etc. Jazz, mostly guitar-based but I enjoy pretty much all types of jazz. Django Reinhardt, Johnny Smith, Miles Davis, Pearl Django, etc. Death Metal. Suffocation (they destroy all), Necrophagist (one of the most tech death metal bands to ever exist and the first cd is just one man), Neuraxis, Carcass, etc. I was actually in a death metal band called Harakiri. The band hasn't technically broken up, but we haven't played or practiced in like a year and a half now. Punkrock/Emo. Sunny Day Real Estate, Rival Schools, Weezer, Coheed and Cambria, etc. I was in a punkrock-ish/emo-ish band called About the Fire until I quit last winter because I got busy with school and work and didn't have the desire to play as many shows as the rest of the band wanted to play. I guess that's about it right now.

I was just in Prog/Power heavan this weekand at ProgPower USA VI! Find all kinds of cool stuff to explore. I got something like 20+ CDs that I bought there. I was just listening to Vox Tempus i]In The Eye of Timne[/i], which is really, really good! The vocalist sounded very much like Styx's lead! On the way back from the airport, I had DreamScape End of Silence just friggan SCREAMING out of my audio system in the car (and pretty damn cool that I got the whole band to sign the album - not to mention spending a good 1/2 hour just shooting the breeze with the bassist! Awesome guys to just hang out with!). Very tempting to ride up to Jaxx tommorrow afterwork and see if I can catch Stratovrius again!
