Adding a Power AMP

I have RF35, RB35 , RC35, PB12-ISD running through a Yamaha RXV1500.

Use it like 80% movies, 20% music. What would adding a power amplifier

(i.e. RMB1075 or 1095) do if I decide to get one? Been seeing a lot of

post about it but really couldn't get a grip on the concept. Doesn't

the receiver act as an amplifier already or am I totally clueless on

this post? TIA

The addition of a separate power amp serves several purposes. It is a first step to separates. Receivers rarely make rated power nor do they effectively drive low impedance loads. A separate amp should drive low impedance loads with ease which improves sound quality. It will be much harder to clip. The elimination of clipping will reduce harshness and prevents speaker damage.

Besides Rotel, are there any other brands that anyone would recommend and what model that falls within my budget of $800?

Marantz MM9000 5 channel amp has nice warm sound. Great for movies and good for music.

Hey Mcgoo, somehow I doubt he's having clipping issues with a 1500. Yamaha is pretty good with their ratings in the RXV line, and if he's running Klipsch speakers, low impedence is also not a factor. Jumping from 120 to even 200 watts is not going to make a whole lot of difference, except in the weight of his wallet, IMO.[]

Most multi-channel receivers clip. It manifests itself as harshness and distortion. Borrow a separate amp and you will hear a significant difference.

Exceptions would be Sunfire and B&K recivers. Many of the Yamahas put out 35 to 50 wpc, all channels driven. The manufacturers' ratings are misleading.

Receivers use a single pair of MOS-FETs. Separate amps use more output devices per channel. B&K uses 5 pairs on its Reference amps. Separate amps are able to follow the impedance curve and deliver the needed current as impedance varies which yields better frequency response.

I hooked up mt B&K Ref 200.f to my RF3-II system while waiting for the 7s to come in. It made a big difference. Also using a Yamaha receiver.

With only 800 you might want to get a two or three channel amp now and

let the reciever to the rest. It frees up alot of power with in

the receiver for the rest. This way you will get a great sounding

system that you can afford. Just a thought. I did this for

a while and it made a huge differnce.

I think the 1075 would fall into that price range. I was reading some

posts and it was pointed out that most dealers would discount it to

$850 and this was like 2003. The other brands are more expensive so

i'll scratch them out. I'll try to visit a rotel dealer soon. My other

problem is how to convince/(or hide it) from my boss ......i meant my

wife. [:$]
