seti
I have been checking out the CD Player / Transports on Audiogon for a long time now. What are the most important components in a CDP? Is it the DAC, Transport, or Power Supply? I found a couple different DACs that seem to be in alot of higher end CDPs and then did a Froogle search and found the same DAC in some less expensive CDPs. Just curious what should steer a person to one CDP over another.

Daddy Dee
Seti, I'm not going to be of any help with DAC or transport recommendations. When I got interested in upgrading and did a little reading, thought that for my level of expertise and interest, I didn't want to deal with the possibility that it could be like real work to get the gear set up right. What I ended up with was the AH! with upsampler and a Heart CDP (another Dutch Marantz tubed modded unit) and couldn't be happier. They are both very good, to my ears, in their sound. If you should decide to do go in that direction instead of the DAC/transport way, both are good options. The Heart CD doesn't have an upsampler option, but even so was given the rating edge by Dick Olshner who reviewed both players.
BiggerIsBetter
Given the sensitivity of the kipsch speaker, there are some real posibilities to use a passive preamp. I do, with grreat results. If that is a driection you want to go, you need a player (or DAC if seprates) that has a good quality output and enough voltage to drive you amp to near peak. For example, my amps require 2.3 volt to achieve peak output. I selected a DAC that has a good tube output stage and puts out 5 volts....no need for a preamp. just one consideration....
