Colin
I have a connection loose in one of my classic Klipsch corner Khorn. It is 1989, with AK-2s (still) but wired with aging gray Monster cable. What is the best solder and most practical iron to get to join the crossover wire back to the driver? Thanks []
LarryC
I only solder once every year or two, but just got a new Weller Universal 140/100 watt soldering gun and am very happy with it. (I also have a very cumbersome "soldering station" which I don't like.) The Weller gun heats up very fast, quickly heats the wire or tabs to let them melt and flow on the solder, and then get out quickly for it to cool (use a heat sink like a snap-on forceps for tabs going to delicate things like a voice coil). I like Siltech silver solder. DeanG gave great how-to instructions in a past thread.
Malcolm
A 40 watt soldering iron and 60/40 or 63/37 solder would be fine.
DRBILL
Listen to Malcom. I like KESTER solder. Uniform high quality. After the iron is hot, make sure it is clean and bright looking. Flick the oxides off with an old swab of bath towell. Then re-tin the tip with fresh solder. If the joint is old and grungy, use No-Ko-Rode soldering paste. A dot on a q-tip is all it takes. I use a RadioStore iron that allows for the replacement of tips. I have had the same one for 24 years. I use it almost every day! We're talking lead (Pb) here. Don't breathe the fumes.
