jcmusic
This is my first impressions of the newly aquired, Antique Sound Labs 2a3 SET Orchid Intergrated amp. The sound is very clean and detailed, alot of detail. May be attributed to the 12ax7's, I am going to a 12au7 to see if I can warm up the sound a little. The bottom end is just fine, pretty much all the way through. No problems there. The sound stage as some would call it, is a little hard for me to judge as my room is on the small side. The clarity is as good as I have ever heard, the 3.2 watts has no problem making the k-horns come alive. Plenty of headroom and power to spare. As far as music goes I have tried a few different venues, some soft rock; sounded very good. Instrumental sounds very detailed and clear, I am a little unsure about the vocals as of yet. I have not listened long enough to go there, as far as jazz; it sounded the best to me thus far. Everything seems to come alive in the jazz venue. Classical sounds like something I have never heard before, It comes out of the black and then goes back as fast as it came out. I don't listen to alot of classical so I am not an authuority on it, you will have to judge for yourself. There are some other things I want to say, but I am losing my trend of thought for now. More to follow, Oh yea I almost forgot, the overall sound seems to be very fast and accurate. Now the k-horns may have something to do with that, not 100% sure. To sum it up alittle, clear, clean, sharp, fast, accurate, very detailed, and maybe a little on the bright side.
Colin
very curious, how does it compare to other tube and s-s amps you have heard with horns?
jcmusic
Colin, the only other tubes I have heard on my horns; was the Scott 299. Of the top of my head the Scott sounded a little more tuby if you will. As far as SS goes, only my Marantz stuff and it's kind of hard to compare. The Marantz is kind of liquidy as far as SS goes, but it's SS what can I say. Hard to compare to tubes. Jay
Daddy Dee
Jay, Thanks for the review. I have been curious about the Orchid and other ASL amps.
jcmusic
Hey Dee, no problem. There will be more later, after I roll the tubes a little. Jay
