MyGoesTo11
Why would a guy that works on commission recommend a ksw-12 vs sub-12 which they dont sell anymore. He says the ksw are tighter sounding (not only best buy) any truth to this?

oldbuckster
Don't go to Tweeters................shop around, that's not a bad price.............it really depends on what your needs are, I personally don't see the need to spend thousands of dollars on a sub woofer..................your money..........your choice..... fabulousfrankie
Just curious, why not go to Tweeter? A good sub is paramount in a home theater. It can completely change the experience. Bass is the hardest thing for speakers to reproduce, so spending some money on your sub kind of makes sense. I say pony up for the SUB12...the KSW series are one not boomers. Jay481985
get a sub 12 but how long is the tc3000 project from, it might be worth it to wait. Also sealed, ported, passive radiator?
Paul
Wait and get the Sub 12 or something better If you have $.
MyGoesTo11
I have about six months to figure everything out,and much to learn before getting dirty, but for now this would be kick ***-SVC 15"TC-2000 $300,a good quality amp $300-400 ? and materials, well under thousands. The 15" goes down to 18hs and for another $100 the 15"-3000 or better yet 12"LMS-4000 digs down to 15hs. Jay481985
no no no no no..... that is fs, subwoofers are determined mostly by the enclosure given...... Before you touch upon DIY subwoofer, you need to read up..... http://www.diysubwoofers.org/ you just cannot plop a subwoofer into a box and think it will sound good. You have to make the box for the subwoofer to sound good. And this is home audio not car audio so there is a big difference. If you need teaching as DrWho, or Formica, or anyother Klipsch member including me. Also please read up this before you try DIY http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=faq1 this explains what fs and Q means
DrWho
The guy at Best Buy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. The new Sub-12 is extremely good for the money - even DIY has a hard time matching the bang for the buck. I could never live with a KSW, but I could live with a sub-12. As far as the custom sub is concerned...A 15" TC3000 will do 130dB with an F3 of 16Hz in a 6 cubic foot box tuned to 20Hz. Passive radiators would be an ideal scenario, but a 1x15" port that is 14" deep would be more than sufficient for levels under 120dB. This would be the amp I'd recommend as its natural rolloff works real well to protect the driver from unloading below the tuning frequency: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-
DrWho
If you want to start getting your hand messy with the modelling, then check out these free programs: WinISD (what I use) - http://www.linearteam.dk/ UniBox - http://home20.inet.tele.dk/kou/ubmodel.html Jay already mentioned diysubwoofers.org which is a basic overview. Here are some more sites to look at: http://ldsg.snippets.org/ (information overload about all things audio related) http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html (it's important to have a firm grasp on acoustics - great overview here) http://www.trueaudio.com/st_trade.htm (they don't state it as such, but simple analogy of hoffman's iron law - critical to design of subwoofers) http://www.thielesmall.com/ (a great database of TS parameters) And here's a prediction of the TC-3000 15" and 12" drivers:

Tweeter is high priced, has a habit of running a low price on a special, until you go there looking for the special only to find out; 1 only one unit and it's sold ; 2 it's a mis -print sorry ; 3 some sales person who doesn't know what they are talking about ; 4 seems like wherever there is a Best Buy there is a Tweeters, funny are they owned by the same corporation? or is Tweeters selling high end stuff they can't sell in Best Buy? Do I like Tweeters? ...............No I don't.............
MyGoesTo11
Thanx for the input everyone, and the links are golden.I'm slowly picking up the technical aspects of the audio world. My DIY project is still six months away,so I made an impulse buy on ebay today, let me know what you think. Its a RW-12" for $192 and the seller states:the sub works but at a very low volume, with the pod disconnected from the amp it plays at full volume, and cant turn it down.I can fix almost anything but how much will I have to spend to get it working right.Good or bad buy???
