Seriously, at a minimum you will need a meter, some test tones, and a parametric eq.

Without those tools you are guessing. If guessing, then err on the conservative side. Too much bass is fake bass IMO. If you notice the sub then it's too loud and detracting from the music.

The volume should be set so you don't notice it when it's on, but do notice when it goes off.
