Too, if one didn't know how to solder, investing in a good crimper and some spade lugs could be a good investment and lots cheaper than paying really insane amounts of money

...for wire. If wire is of narrow AWG, heat shrink can be offer some strain relief, otherwise it's not much more than some guy putting on a necktie to go out for dinner. I agree with you on the copper oxidation issue, especially on the insides of cabinets where one doesn't spend much time looking -- unless one has a really boring life! :)
