Using the speakers without subwoofer

I have 4 Klipsch speakers that came with 4.1 speakers. The speakers are good, but the subwoofer died a while ago. I have not been able to get it fixed, so I have dumped it. I am wondering if I would be able to use these speakers without the subwoofer. What would I need, in order to use these in a 4.1 (i have subwoofer, not klipsch though) on a desktop with 8 channel audio? I am looking to spend less than 100$. I have tried to directly connect them to my desktop, but I guess the power isn't enough for the speakers.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi there. I'm bringing an old thread back as my current situation seems to parallel this thread.

First off, I'm not audio savvy at all, so I would need a simple explanation of anything technical.

I have a set of 4.1 promedia speakers from a while back...I'd say around 4-5 years ago at least. I've now set up the subwoofer and two satellites (including the control pod) to act as TV speakers, which is working out great. This leaves me with the last two satellites, which I'd like to hook up and act as my computer speakers. To accomplish this, I have the following questions:

1) Would this work without an amp? Or would there not be enough power to get decent volume from the satellites?

2) If an amp is needed, what would I need? Any links to examples of what I need would be great, since I'm not that technically savvy. Am I right in assuming that "receiver" is pretty much the same thing as an amp?

3) Assuming I don't need an amp, what kind of cable would I need to connect these satellites to my sound card? My sound card is an old hercules gametheater xp with both, a mini-jack output or the red and white (right and left) audio outputs. I assume any such cable isn't readily available off the shelf and that I'd have to do some soldering?

Any other information, pointers, or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
