Subwoofer Hookup Question

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased Klipsch speakers (RB 82 fronts, RS 62 center and RS 52 surrounds) which I am using with an an existing sub (Polk PSW350) and an older Onkyo TX-SR-600 receiver. The receiver has a single "subwoofer pre-out" output and I currently have all of the speakers set to small with a crossover in the receiver of 80hz. The sub has an unfiltered LFE input as well as filtered left and right "line inputs." Which input on the sub (LFE or line inputs) should I use to connect the sub to the receiver? Also, with the Klipsch speakers I have, where should I set the crossover on the receiver and on the sub? I use my system, primarily for home theatre use.

I know enough about this stuff to be dangerous, so any advice is appreciatged.

This has been covered but I will just pass on this info passed on to me in older threads.

Set the crossover wide open as low as it goes on the sub, let the receiver do the work or bypass the crossover on the sub if thats an option. Also I just use the right input on the sub and it works fine. You shouldnt need to use a y splitter. Refer to the directions if you still have them. The Speakers setting should probably be LARGE. The Small setting wont allow anything lower then 80Hz to go to the mains if you set the receiver to small. Most receivers will share the lower frequencies with the mains if the LARGE setting is used. Its like this on my Yamaha.

Believe me, I've read the instructions for my receiver, sub, speakers, etc. and the information on how to connect the sub is conflicting. I've also read the previous posts on this forum and they seem to conflict with what you are saying to some extent.

If I use the unflitered LFE input on the sub instead of the left or right filtered line inputs, will I receive bass from the sub when watching HDTV sources that do not contain Dolby digital sound? Are there other advantages to using the LFE input on the sub?

If I do use the line inputs on the sub, previous posts as well as the directions on my speakers indicate that the speakers should probably be set to small in the receiver and the crossover in the receiver should be set to 80h. I also understand that when using the line inputs on the sub, the crossover on the sub should be set as high as possible (160hz) to avoid the effect of "double filtering." Is this correct?

Any clarification or additional advice is appreciated.

Ron

Yes, if your speakers are set to SMALL.

Are there other advantages to using the LFE input on the sub?

The LFE input is "unfiltered". You should use it if you're using your receiver's subwoofer output, whether you set your speakers to SMALL or LARGE. Then the receiver will do all the bass management and the sub's LFE input, being "unfiltered", will not have any affect on what the receiver sends to it.

If your speakers are set to SMALL then the sub will receive the LFE channel PLUS all the bass below your receiver's crossover setting. If your speakers are set to LARGE, then the sub will receive only the LFE channel.

If you're going to set the speakers to SMALL then definitely just use the unfiltered LFE input, not the line inputs. The LFE input bypasses the sub's crossover altogether, thereby eliminating any chance of "double filtering".

Again, it's simple, if you're using the receiver's single subwoofer out, then use the unfiltered LFE input. The only reason to use the line inputs is if you're using the receivers left and right pre-outs (if it even has them) and have the speakers set to LARGE.
