I currently own a pair of late 80's Cornwalls in light oak that i have paired with late 80's high end Yamaha separates (M series amp, CX series preamp) and a M&K sub. I have been considering the addition of an integrated tube amp just to see what all the fuss is about and to satisfy my own curiousity. One of the least costly entry level products in the tube world that i have come across so far appears to be the Jolida 102B integrated tube amp. Now to the questions: 1) Is there anybody here on list that is running a pair of Cornwalls with this specific Jolida amp that would care to share their experiences with the combination? I also have a pair of CF1's in my bedroom system and was wondering how the Jolida would do with them? 2) I have lusted over a pair of Khorns since i bought my Cornwalls new in the late 80's. I am getting so tight in my middle age though that i just can't bring myself to fork over the money for a pair of new Khorns, but i am watching the used market with interest. Is there enough difference in the sound quality between the Cornwall and the Khorn to considering dropping around 2K on a used set of Khorns, or should i just stay as contented as i already am with the Cornwalls? I listen primarily to jazz, some rock, some pop. Basically all over the arena as far as listening preference. Thanks in advance for any and all replies. oldbuckster Posted March 16, 2008 Share Posted March 16, 2008 Two different speakers .................. change the crossovers is the least expensive route to go ..... need good corners for Khorns, but I bet you would like Khorns ......... again, though, old speakers need new crossovers if you want best possible sound !!!!!!! troutboy Posted March 16, 2008 Author Share Posted March 16, 2008 Unfortunately, the only audio equipment shop in town that carried most of the Klipsch line closed out a few years back. I once had a Jolida 502B and sold it. Not because it sounded bad, but it had a bunch of noise in the knobs. It was my first foray into tubes and I simply sold it not realizing I could have upgraded parts of it. Onto the next... You are more than welcome to swing by my place for a listen. troutboy Posted March 17, 2008 Author Share Posted March 17, 2008 Coytee, I thought old buckster's intentions included maybe finding someone locally who had a set as well as a dealer that had a set to audition. I don't know about your experience, but just about everyone that i know just looks at you with a confused look on their faces when you mention Klipsch in general, much less when you want to add Khorns to the discussion. Of course i must preface that statement with the understanding that most of the people i know aren't as interested in audio equipment to the extent that i am. My Cornwalls matched with the M&K sub sound really tight and focused and i was just wondering if i would notice that much difference going to the Khorns. I realize that most people are going to say "you don't really need the sub", but first let me explain that i am a long time bass player (both electric and upright) and as such am very critical about the sound of the low end. With the addition of a decent Yamaha equalizer and the crossover and volume controls of the sub to accompany very clean power from the Yamaha amps, the sound is really tight. The sound might even be too sterile for some folks, but you can pick out the very fine details in a recording with the setup. A well recorded and mastered disc sounds remarkable, just as a recording that is lacking details really shows it through the system. Someone that i thought possibly knew what they were talking about made the statement that Khorns were primarily intended for classical music listening and that they probably wouldn't do as well with jazz or rock. It just got me wondering about the comparison between the Khorns and the Cornwall. I consider my sytem a "mid-fi" system and not quite the audiophile setup that some people strive for. My middle aged bank account and the tendency to become more conservative when spending on "luxury" items as i have grown older has taken away all aspirations in pursuing that avenue. I am content with my existing system and my listening area isn't that big to start with. The Cornwalls kind of dominate the room both in the visual and audio areas. The addition of the Khorns would be even more intimidating i would guess and the speakers would probably not have enough space to reach their full potential, but i still would love to give them a shot just for grins and giggles to check them out. oldbuckster Posted March 17, 2008 Share Posted March 17, 2008 Mike, I went to several members homes to listen to Khorns, and SET amps, long story short, I ended up with Cornwalls, and I too run a sub, they were just a better fit for ME. I do have the room for Khorns, but for what I listen to, they didn't work, and I did not care for the sound of SET's amp powering them. I am not knocking them, just not for me ......... ever changed your crossovers? I wish I was closer to him, I'd be there all the time, playing my music on his stereo, eatin' his food, drinkin' his drink, drivin' him crazier than he already is .............. Forum buddies .... I am too middle aged and out of shape to spend much time running from attack dogs.[] I am going to have to talk to him more about this. Of course my hearing isn't what it used to be because of tinnitus from playing music. I am almost afraid to go because it would probably end up costing me $$$ when i wanted to upgrade what i have after listening to his. He lives out near the Cross-Eyed Cricket (I presume you know where that is). I'm sure there are other Khorns owners here but he's all I know of. He's got 2 Khorns in his living room and three LaScalas in his basement that he's finishing right now. I know he'd be happy to audition the Khorns. If you wanted...you could then swing by my place (I could go with you to Dales also) and hear the Jubilees. Looks to me like you are just contemplating the Jolida right now? If you already have it, I'd bet lunch that you could take it over to Dales and he'd be happy to let it play on his Khorns. I know you'd be welcome to try same at my place. Right now, for the next couple weeks, I've got a pair of older Cornwalls at the house, currently in basement. James is going to be coming down to get them BUT... with some help (cough cough...that's where you'd come in [:|]) we could carry them upstairs and do a side by side with them next to the Jubilees (aka "Pluglies") Just let me know if you want to do any of the above. Interesting because the cricket is only a few miles from my work and i am sure you will know immediately where i work now if i tell you it is just north of there on 95. I haven't bought the Jolida stuff yet and wanted to get a little input from you folks on the list before i bought something that i was a little unsure of what to expect. As far as humping the cornwalls from your basement, it would depend on how many breaks we got to take on the way up the stairs[] You guys scare me with all these offers to come listen to the Khorns. I am afraid that once i hear them i will just have to go after a set. Ignorance may be bliss and surely less costly in this instance. I am just uncertain that i want to wander into the murky waters of the tube world. I already have a used audio store in my back bedroom full of ss preamps, amps, surround processors, etc. that i just have lying around. I need to get them on ebay and make some money to buy more toys i guess. I probably won't ask you to make a special trip to do the listening, but if you are going to be in that area and you are aware of it in advance and Dale doesn't mind, please get in touch a day or so ahead of time. [] I suppose you work at one of the plants. Maybe you glow... It's no special trip... Dale's a nice guy and as for being in that area... just a matter of me going home a different route. I'll send him an email & see what his thoughts are. He works out of state at times so if he's around, he'll respond quickly and if he's not, might take a couple days. As for me... you're invited & just a matter of you figuring out if/when you'd like to do it. Although weekends are typically the easiest times, since you are local, weekdays are ok too.
