Cal Blacksmith
The Craigs list in L.A. has a Denon AVR-1802 and a set of Senergy 5.1 speakers. Best I can tell they are SF2 mains with SC 1 center and SS1 surrounds with a KSW12 sub. I think I can get it for $600 I have not paid attention to the serergy speakers so I am not sure how good of a deal this is providing that it is all in good shape. I know the Dennon is worth only $100 to $150 so that leaves the speakers at $500 apx. I don't really need this setup but I could use it with my TV, a 50" rear pj Sony. I currently have an older (18 years) Yamaha 2 ch receiver with a pair of Heresy 2s there so this "upgrade" would only be just because. What to do? Cal Blacksmith
Ok they are not heritage but why pass?
streyle
I'd suggest listening to them before even thinking about buying them....
bigdaddy
This statement answers it's own question. They are not heritage and will not sound nearly as nice.
Cal Blacksmith
I went to see the speakers and there was more equipmentinvolved than I thought. In addition to the two FS2 mains, SC1 center, two SS1sides, KSW12 sub and the Denon receiver, there was a Pioneer Elite DVD player,6 fire hose sized Monster stereo pair interconnects, 2 Monster single interconnects,1 Monster RGB cable and apx 100’ of Monster 14 gauge speaker wire from the oldsetup but still useable to me in my setup and two Monster power filters (notsurge protectors). Two DVD movies (left in the bottom of the box), all themanuals for everything and all the remote controls except for the Pioneer DVDplayer (but the Denon unit was programmed for the DVD player) and a programmabletouch screen universal remote. I would not go out of my way to buy Monster stuff but it isof good quality, over priced but good quality. Also included but useless to me wasa Sony VCR and Sony Direct sat receiver, assorted wall wart power supplies, fire wire cables, telephone extension cablesand a broadcast TV amplifier. The asking price was $800 (too much for sure) I left witheverything for $500, not bad I think. I got the TV room setup changed over lastnight, ran the cables but put the surrounds on tables, I have yet to mount themto the wall. It took a little while to get the receiver configured for surroundsound but by the end of the night it was online. I still need to set volumes, distances, delays and voices for the speakers. My initial evaluation of thesetup is that it is no where near on a par with my all Heritage setup in the HTbut the speakers are all voiced the same, in good shape and not huge, which inthis room is a good thing. All in all, MUCH better than a set of Blows cubesand for less money. Coming from a Heritage background, I do find that the Synergysystem is not near as detailed, the highs are muted a bit, the mids are muddybut with the sub, the lows are OK. The imaging just is not there, in stereomode, there is NO sound stage, just two speakers with a hole in the middle. Thecenter does fill this hole well and overall the system is OK for backgroundlistening to music but does well with a movie sound track, which is what it was purchased for. Pleasant but not ona par with heritage, but I knew that going into this deal. An upgrade to the receiver might help with the imaging butthen there is still much tweaking to do to this setup before I can draw anymore firm conclusions to what I have said so far. oldbuckster
Enjoy ................... not a bad deal, but don't you own Forte's ?
Cal Blacksmith
Fort'es, Quartets, RB1s, Cornwalls, Academy, Heresy 1s, Heresy 2s, Quintets, Industrial LaScalla top section, GMX 5.1 and now this FS2- 5.1 system, I'm starting to sound like Coulter[] Honestly, I never expected the S system to match the rest of what I had, I just wanted to go 5.1 in the TV "room" this is actually a corner of a much larger room and getting a proper HT setup would be tough and the Heresy mains I had with no room for a center, was about the limit in size with everything else needing to be bookshelf size or smaller, but getting much better sound for TV watching and the ocasional movie is filled by this system. For critical music listening this system fallls short but for TV it is pretty good and to quote a Blose add" When compaired to TV speakers, this system blows it away" I might add my own take on that line When compaired to the Bose cube system, this system blows it away! jheis
Cal: Try different amplification. I briefly had a Denon 1804 and the SQ was simply horrible (IMHO). Tuner sucked too. Couldn't hold a candle to the 15 year old Carver amp I had at the time. James
Cal Blacksmith
Thanks for the info! I did take out my 18yo Yamaha for the Denon but the Yamaha only has simulated suround and no center so as a perm replacement I will probably look somewhere else but the swap will tell about the SQ from the Denon for sure! Thanks
