Difference between a DAC and a transport

I'll take a stab at it...

If your CD has a digital out as mine does, then you can either plug into the analog outputs and feed those into your preamp at which point your cd player is acting like....well.... a cd player [^o)]

If on the other hand, you plug your digital out into a digital input like I've done and your preamp is the unit that is actually doing the decoding, then your cd player is only providing "bits" to your preamp (decoder) and as such, is only operating as a 'transport' to spin your disk. I think that's the deal

Advantages/disadvantages?

Call me clueless....

DAC = typically refers to an external stand alone device which only has the function of converting digital signals to analog signals that can be sent to RCA connections.

Transport = typically refers to a device whose only function is to convert the information stored on a CD or DVD to digital signals which may be sent to a optical or coax output.

The spec's for your SA-8001 look real good.

You can spend 5K on a transport and 7K on a DAC, will it knock your socks off, probally not.
