  1. thanks for the quick answers guys. great crowd here. I bought new crossover kits years ago from ALK Engineering. couple months ago painted the bases black. thats as far as I got with them. time to get them built. maybe I will hear these speakers like they never sounded before.
  2. Have some klipsch Forte with titanium in both highs and mids. last month noticed distortion in one of the mids. I had my old diaphragms so I installed that in the affending driver. but the distortion is still there. It appears the cause is actually coming from the crossover. is this possible? The crossovers are original. The diaphragms did look fine and the DCR checked in at 9ohm for all three that I had. blew the gap out with compressed air.
  3. system= HP envy laptop with beats audio. tec on audio 55 vac tube amp with internal D/A converter. garage sale 30$ KSB 3.1. sound has been quite remarkable listening to just Pandora basic. fantastic imagery, spacious, airy . currently miffed as my computer freind just updated laptop to lastest version of Linux from version 14 to 17 (I think) and I now have a digital artifact that sounds like distortion riding along on the midbass somewhere. . short of reinstalling old version what can I do that might help?
  4. I use a peachtree decco for two channel audio/HT. amazing one box solution. includes 50wpc amp, fed by tube preamp, fed by phillips TDA1543 chipped NOS DAC. three in one for fantastic value. cheapy blue ray player digital out to decco, into fotre II cheapmusicalnirvana.
  5. picked them up for 30$ for the pair. figured I could sell the HP and make a little. keep the small tektronics around for stereo repair. Didnt get any manuals. and only one probe. the t922 seems to be wroking fine. I get a straight line when I power it on. and most of the controls change the line in some way when adjusted. there is a small point on chassis that says "cal" and a ground spot near the bottom. hate to start probing things without more knowledge
  6. Picked up a couple real cheap. they are supposed to be working condition. how can I do a quick test to verify they still work?
  7. Just ordered my Ti midrabge diaphram kits. they quoted me 78 per kit. The K 53 ti driver was 85 but they were out of stock. 2-3 week wait. So I opted for the diaphrams at 164 shipped
  8. I have been on the upgrade search for months. Contemplating finidng something that works better than the Forte II. Finally decided that this speakers just does everthing well. Finding a better speaker would likely be more of lateral move. So i have decided to move forward with the upgrade path for them. I already have decided the Titanium tweets are a no brainer. have them here already just not installed. Cant really find any post where anyone thought the original diaphrams work better. Almost all report immediately noticable difference. smoother more real seems to best desribe them. Next on my list is titanium mids. Those that have them say they are also immediatley noticable upgrade. not as much as tweeters but worth doing. just the same. Last would be the crossovers. just not sure how far to go wth them. I removed them last night and they just look new. The speakers are from 96 so the caps are about 15 years old. All the coils and wires still brigt and shiney new looking. With their look and the fact the stock frequencly output of forte speaker is about as good as it gets. +/- 2db from 50-20k hz. +/- 3db from 30-20k hz. doesnt get much better than that really. Seems to me if you redesign the crossover you are likley ending up with more sound getting through that sounds better to you because now maybe you have a +/- 5db scale. ?? perceived as sounding better in a back to back but in reality a step backwards for a nuetral speaker ?? I am leaning on just cap kit from Bob. at 50$ next up from that is ALK kit at 160$ next ALK kit plus Bobs autotransformers. at 240$ then the final "I am gonna go all out with some 2000$ outboard crossovers" cause money grows on trees and I might as well spend it. No just kidding. Not considering this path. just far too much experiemntation at hand. (love you set12)
  9. I will update my own thread since there wasnt much interest. I tried KLF10, KG 4.2, KG 2.2 and my beloved Forte II. All speakers stock. In short nothing came close to the Fortes. Even for near field low volume listening the Fortes cant be toppled. They are just an outstanding speaker. If I give the Forte a 10 then i would rate the others as follows: 2.2 gets a 7/10. sounded dark, flat. poor low level detail. 4.2 considerably better. 8/10 noticeably better than 2.2 right away. still short of forte in every sense. klf 10. 8.5/10 . the 10 is just darker sounding. less music detail getting through. forte just sounds fuller. the 10 may have had slighly better bass. and I really likely the look of klf 10. was hoping i could live with sound change but to me it wasnt even close. going from klf10 to forte was like lifting a towel from the front of the speakers. and as an interesting side note. I found some nice cabinets at a garage sale for 20$. EPI m150. or so i thought I was buying some nice cabinets. The owner said the speakers sounded great and i could bring them back if I didnt like them. I said I was just interested in the cabinets. I was wanting to try some 8 full range and thought these cabinets would be pefect. well a big surprise awaited me. these speakers sound absolutely fantastic. they are the closet thing in the house compared to my fortes. they have mids and highs to die for and surprisingly good bass from a single eight driver. They won the wifes bedroom system spot with ease. 9.25/10
  10. holy mother load batman! I dont want to here his prices....already painful enouh he is so faraway.. Edit: found the pricing. glad hes not givng stuff away. did some cross checking and saw this. dang e-bay newbie. http://cgi.ebay.com/Marantz-7-series-integrated-amp-cabinet-/120679979740?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c19165adc
  11. kg 2.2 ad forte 2 measure 5.0ohm resistance. I cant measure impedance. that varies with v and fq. impedance drops well below 4 at low freq this is the cheap amp worth trying you may have seen thread already http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=76400.360cheap amp and good bass is VERY difficult to achieve/find
  12. klipsch speakers are actually 4 ohm when you measure them..so the amp you are looking at only pushes 40 watt at 4 ohm. half that and you have 20 watts. my guess is bass controll will be very poor
  13. To those who have switched to titaniums . can the difference be heard at low volumes?
  14. I have never had space for surrounds. I listen 50/50 movies and 2 channnel stereo. Old system was pair Heresy II , KV center, paradigm sub and Pioneer elite 5 channel. I used this for years thinking I had good stereo and really good 3 channel HT. New system is pair of Forte II, and a peachtree audio decco. The new system blows away the old in every department. 2 channel HT is awesome. 2 channel litening stunning. Even digital tele is blowing me away how good it sounds. Plus the Decco is setup to play music flies with USB input. Onboard DAC, tube pre, and 50wpc amp. For the simplicity the sound is remarkable on efficient speakers. 9:30 oo clock is all thats needed to get my kids jumping when HT transients hit. Decco also has a pre out to use better amp. I recently tried a smooth sounding 150wpc B&K amp in the mix. Only improvemnt I heard as bass was a tad tighter at loud listening levels, but the smoothness (tubelike) detracted from tele and HT. so out it went. What I recommend is get rid of the 5 channel amp in favor of a good two channel one. You will not miss 3 channel HT . I have not heard the bass of RF-82 but I do not miss sub with my fortes.
  15. I have had my decco for a couple years now. I use it for two channel home theater mostly. also use it for 2 channel audio as well. Also sounds just fantastic on digital television. I have never used it for what most people buy it for. And that is to listen to stored music files from their computer. I want to start doing this but I dont know how to get started. Can I do this from any computer that has usb port? how do I get this digital out signal? can I listen to FM radio that is on laptop? found a killer station to listen to. Sure would like to hear through this Decco. I just bought a usb cable that connects decco to laptop. Dont know how to proceed from here. Thanks of the help guys and Merry Christmas to all.
