  1. Several months ago I replaced the ALK networks I had in my lascalas with the original AA networks and recapped the originals with the Klipsch approved JEM caps.  I can say this was a very good change for me and my lascalas sound like they used to again.  Hard to describe, but just right.  I recommend giving this a try if you want to have the original factory sound.

I liked the change so much that I just did the same thing to my cornwalls about a month ago.  I removed the ALK networks and installed the original Type B networks and recapped them with a JEM cap replacement kit.  It's not been very long but I could tell right away the balance was back and it's nice to know they are back to the original factory spec.

These were easy changes as well as the kits come with a schematic and all the mounting hardware.

This was a good idea for Klipsch to take the time to figure this out and offer these kits.

If you are not confident in making the changes yourself, look up DeanG.  He can do it for you.

In my case I have older speakers and the networks were fairly simple.  Not too many parts.

  2. ALK design for cornwalls.

I am the original owner and these have been in a working pair of cornwalls for a few years.  They look like they were built yesterday and are in "as new" condition.  These were built by DeanG.  All Auricaps, one Dayton cap and massive inductor on woofer.  Litz inductors on squawker and tweeter.

I've been in contact with several people who have recapped with the Tecate polyesters from JEM. They like them. No complaints. So, I think it's more than possible that better film quality and construction may make this metalized capacitor a better sounding part than it used to be. Lead attachments too, which used to be pressed in using a conductive paste, are now spot welded after an end spray is applied.

I very much feel like it's just easier to just use the part Klipsch recommends at this point.

I recapped some AAs with the JEM caps and have had them in my lascalas for months now.  They displaced a pair of Super X.  Honestly, they sound great.  I just received another kit from JEM for my cornwalls.  I'm about to open them and remove the DeanG universals with Auricaps and Audio Cap Thetas that have been in there for the last 10 years.  Going back to the start to see what happens.  🙂

Of course if you spend more you will certainly see that little bit more of magic that makes all the difference -- How could it be any other way ?

But some are able to spend less, way less, and get extremely good results from that, knowing the real gains are made in room treatment.  Resonant chamber and comb filter effects anyone ?

This hobby is definitely an art.  No argument that you can build a nice sounding less expensive system in a good sounding room and be very happy.

What concerns me sometimes is the gushing threads over a chip amp that costs less than a night out with my wife.  Then, a few months later the truth comes out.  If I had to choose some "budget" amplification I would immediately go to the DIY amp builder guys.  I know what I could find among them.

  5. I have not tried Benchmark amps but I have had all of the DACS and still use the DAC3.

On my UJ I am way overpowered with McIntosh 8207.  But being multichannel it simplifies the setup tremendously and plays well with the Xilica processor.  I have considered going back to individual amps but I run 3 way with subs and that was a juggling act.  Too many boxes.  I do still have a second amp for the subs.

So the new Jubs offer the opportunity for even better simplicity as well as being able to be very picky as to what amps you use.  I like!

Not to offend anyone here but this has become a very much "budget" forum.  REALLY good electronics DO make a difference.

Yeah, since the Jubilee were setup I have questioned the wisdom of doing this center speaker.  🙂  However, I had already purchased the speaker and everything else I need to convert it to two-way with an Axi2050 HF.  So, at least I will try it out once Parts Express finally gets the Axi2050 back in stock.

When we were in Hope I could not believe how the stereo image came to center.  At one point I was in the center of the couch in the front row and David Lee Roth was singing in the center of the room.  Clearly.  So I agree, with your spacing you may find that for music you may not need a center channel.  For movies maybe different?

Yes, that and a different tweeter.  That stock tweeter just doesn't have sufficient top end extension for me.  However, neither will matter once the Axi2050 arrives.  🙂

The Belle tweeter is most definitely attenuated by the bad caps.  Replace the caps and the tweeter will come back.  You will never be happy trying to match top ends until you get the same top end as your Jubs.  Nothing sounds like a 402 horn.  Ask me how I know?  🙂
