I have not opened it and have no plans to. I would think that there would probably be a daughterboard with the power switch, LCD display and Bass Management LEDs on it attached by a small ribbon cable to the main board. I'd suggest not using ultrabright blue LEDs as it would be pretty distracting. Good luck.
  3. http://www.videologic.com/Products/Product.asp?Product=VL-60572&PageType=Specs Looks kind of like a DD-5.1 with some extra airspace in the case to match the dimensions of their amp, doesn't it? Since the power connector is an IEC320 spec cable, it apparently has an internal PS instead of an external wall wort. Do the specs sound a little familar? This decoder has PL II! I'm virtually certain that the DD-5.1 is sourced from VideoLogic systems in the UK or from _their_ ROC contract manufacturer. -Anyone want to wager that this will bear the innards of a DD-5.1 successor? P.S. Amy if you are lurking; please spec the Blue negative mode LCD in the BOM instead of amber for the new DD-5.1 Ultra. Blue LEDs and LCDs are chic. (Well, what else would Klipsch name it?)

Say I didnt' want to wait for this to come in the mail and I wanted to go buy something tomorrow at circuit city or whatever. If I want to hook up my speakers to my TV and my PS2, the DD-5.1 is a good choice. is there an alternative, besides pricey receivers? ---------------- Besides the new Creative Decoder, I'm not aware of anything else remotely comparable to the DD-5.1 in affordability, value, great DACs, performance and configurability. You would be looking at home theatre grade preamp/processors for multiple times more money. You're certainly not going to find _anything_ remotely similar for an impulse buy in CircuitCity, BestBuy, Staples, CompUSA, or any such retail outlets. Go for the DD-5.1. It won't take that long to receive it.

Rear is set to +5, center 0 to +3, and sub is 0 to +5, all depending on the material. Whenveer I use dolby digital i usually put volume on my Ultra pod to 65 and control volume from the dd5.1 on DTS its alot louder and i can drop my ultra pod to 50's even with my DD5.1 at -10 to -20 its still loud or louder than Dolby Digital 5.1 material. I also upgraded my wires to 16 gauge acoustic reasearch copper wires. Any other thing I can answer ot test out i'll be glad to. BTW I also have an Audigy 1 Platinum in this system running along side my Revolution. ---------------- This mirrors my experience entirely with your typical level settings. Soundcard is an Audigy 2. Coaxial digital, line level and 3 SWS sub interconnects are all CobaltCable. Multiple coaxial digital inputs switched by an AudioAuthority 1177 Signal Sensing Digital Source Selector. DD-5.1 outputs to Ultra inputs are 3 StraightWire 1/8" stereo mini to RCA interconnects. (no adapters) http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=31&productID=0050150005 Speaker cables are Regular Monster with gold tips for L/C/R and A/R 16 AWG for L/R surrounds. Other sources include: accessDTV HDTV card with SPDIF AC3 Dolby 5.1 bit stream via coaxial digital. Parasound TDQ-150 Mini Tuner with Magnum-Dynalab MD2 antenna on the line inputs (superb) Yes, the DD-5.1 typically feels warm. This is a good thing as it means that the metal case is actually dissipating some heat. If there is a successor to the DD-5.1 which adds ProLogicII decoding, I'll add one in a heartbeat to this Ultra-based system and use the original one with my classic ProMedia 5.1 system at another location. (Hopefully it would include 24/96 sampling rate support, more digital inputs, even better DACs and have a similar form factor.) Admittedly, this setup is somewhat elaborate, but it works extremely well in this electrically-noisy environment and affords many hours of enjoyment. None of this lavishness would significantly affect the basic signal levels as compared to the stock cables. I rarely venture above 65 on the the Ultra control pod.

But at about $25 a pop, i have to think about it because i would need 2 of them. I may buy them anyway, but i wanted to know if anyone has replaced the thin gauge cable that is supplied with the SWS subs with some heavy gauge monster cables? Any slight difference in tones? ---------------- Not using Monster, but I am using Cobalt Ultimate Sub cables, which I prefer to Monster for 3 SWS subs off an Ultra. The bass tightened up and is more controlled. Excessive? Perhaps. I'm a big believer in using good cables for everything electronic that I own. I choose Cobalt or BetterCables over Monster for just about anything; both audio and video.

I'll change the input, say from coax to aux1, and then I'll try to change the volume, and some times it'll change the input instead. It works in the inverse also. I'll turn it down, then go to change input and the volume will go down again. It does this usually once and then once I press the button on the remote again, it'll correct itself. Has anyone heard of this? Is the remote just screwey (like the tower for the PM-5.1's) batteries low or something? It gets kind of annoying when you try to turn something down, and you don't realize that it's going up until it's at about -5 and you're almost deaf. ---------------- No, but I notice that occasionally when I do Volume down, that I get the pink noise test tones instead. I was just shrugging it off. This is with fresh batteries too, BTW. Since I have the DD-5.1, a Parasound TDQ-150 AM/FM Mini Tuner,(superb) a Holmes window fan. and an A/C in the office... and all with separate I/R remote controls, I was thinking of using a spare Home Theater Master MX-500 universal remote that I have to control them all. The MX-500 I/R Emitter is several times more powerful than typical remotes... enough for triple "bank shots" . I was thinking that the issue might involve garbled or incomplete I/R commands from the DD-5.1 remote. I also have an iPAQ with Nevo R/C Software on it which i programmed for all of this stuff as an amusement. (-Works, but I prefer to use it for Calandar and Contacts) -Not a big deal, but interesting that you mention it.

(Setting to 96 KHz could cause this symptom.)

    The Who

Trully a must have! ---------------- I was not aware that "The Kids are Allright" was out on DVD, thanks for the info. I've saw it first run in the theatre and on VHS many times. I saw The Who in '69. It was my first concert at age 14. They did "Tommy", Keith Moon was alive and vital;they were still instrument smashing. Unfortunately after seing hundreds of concerts over the years, it was my benchmark and was probably the best one... even up 'til now. It's one of my fondest memories. Now I shudder with what's left of The Who. Their music is cut up for commercials and the CSI theme. I'd rather remember them in their prime. "Live at Leeds" is still probably the best live album ever recorded.

The 1m Straight Wire Portable which replaces a two cable system with one (or three for six)is the way to go. One question though. You make referance with " RCA to 2.5mm mini adapters".The mini plug size should be 3.5mm instead of 2.5mm. Please verify as I'm sure it's a typo error. Thanks in advance, Spookertwo ---------------- Yeah, that was a typo, sorry. We'll restate it with the alternate spec: 1/8" mini.
  12. I've been using Monster Digital Coaxial cables for the connections from the A2 Sound Card and accessDTV HDTV card. These each have SPDIF outputs which connect to an Audio Authority 1177 Signal Sensing Digital Switch, which then connects to the single coaxial input on the DD 5.1. This works extremely well and solves switching multiple coaxial inputs to the single DD 5.1 coaxial input: http://www.audioauthority.com/aacconsumers/11551177c.html The 3 cascaded SWS Subs connect with 3 Cobalt Cable Ultimate Sub cables direct from the SWS jack on the Ultra Sub. -Quite an improvement in definition and speed. (I'll probably use Cobalt for all new investments in HT cables... high end performance and value) http://www.cobaltcable.com/product/subwoofer_cable.htm ---------- -But now what to do about the weak link remaining with 3 RCA to 2.5mm mini adapters included with the DD 5.1 and stock cables from the PM 5.1s? Shopped around for a month and finally located some good candidates at Headroom: http://headroom.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=31 I went with (3) of the 1m Straight Wire Portable Cables: http://headroom.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=31&productID=0050150005 This will afford a better signal path without going crazy with some of their more high end solutions. These are all custom cables that they have built for them for high end portable and headphone amp use. -Hope this helps someone.

I can't believe Klipsch released the Ultra 5.1 but not a decoder that has Pro-Logic II! Please help, cus I just got the Ultra and I really want the new decoder! ---------------- Did a little research a couple of weeks ago. I read an article in one of the HT mags and spied a review on a single box HT system by AE of the U.K. What? Looks like a Klipsch DD 5.1 except they want $400 USD for that same decoder. It IS the same box and remote with different colors and branding. The manual looks the same too. I downloaded the user manual and looked it over. VideoLogic Systems makes it for AE. I suspect that Klipsch is also sourcing it from VideoLogic Systems. I'm familiar with them because my PM 5.1 Ultra/DD 5.1 replaced a VideoLogic DigiTheatre DTS system. (They have very limited distribution in the USA) So if I am correct, you won't see an updated DD 5.1 until VideoLogic Systems builds one for Klipsch if ever.

Lately, its been becoming very annoying that when i try to listen to something low on my 5.1 system, somewhere around 20-30, and when i try to pick up the volume on my SWSs (from the 6 o' clock position), the volume skyrockets and jsut lowers and raises again in an erratic manner until i get to the 7 o'clock position. But by that time, the bass is overpowering my 5.1 sub and is extremely loud. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Im starting to think that this dial is experiencing the same problem that the 4.1 systems had before the control pod update...but this time, the volume is the bass level with static. Now that i think about it, it sounds like a problem that i should discuss with tech support. I do have another bass boss dial, but i dont want to screw that one up because the first one was working perfectly when i first got it....after time, it started screwing up. I find myself not being able to play my subs at low volume anymore without waking everyone up first with what sounds like an earthquake and loud banging on drums. Any help? ---------------- Yes, I've noticed this too... between the 6 and 7 o'clock positions. Since I've been running 3 SWSes, I kind of shrugged it off to having a surplus of bass power reserve. I will try switching off two of them and running on one of them for a while. I prefer the 60Hz crossover setting, incidentally.
  15. Before I upgraded to the DD-5.1 with Promedia 5.1 system, I used a Videologic DigiTheatre DTS system. I needed to switch two coaxial digital sources... one from the SB Audigy and one from my AccessDTV HDTV card, so I got one of these: http://www.audioauthority.com/aacconsumers/11551177c.html AudioAuthority 1177 Signal Sensing Digital Audio Source Selector. It does both coaxial and optical. Crawling on the floor to switch digital cables gets old very quickly. Works great, and I'm still using it with the DD-5.1 with Monster digital interconnects.
