  1. Dave has some of his small elliptical tweeters coming.  Will Mate with B&CDE10.  I've done the crites and K77's before.....wanted to try something new.

    Eventually get some crites woofers.

I will use ESN700's and ESN5800's.  I already have them.

So crossing at 700hz. Would that need a new name? Cornheresy?

  2. Yeah.........Don makes a point that we don't discuss much.  No Chris........not a trick question..........but the answer is trick sort of.

In a room time alignment makes a difference.  Absolutely.  I have proven it to myself that it does.  But my opinion is that the precision is overridden to a degree by reflected sound.  You time align to a "point" in space.  Move your head 1 inch and it's off.  Too many reflections and it's off.

a 6Khz wave is 2.25" approximately.  A popular crossover point.  Like I said.......move your hear an inch and your off by a wide margin.,,,,,,,,or suffer too many reflections and it simply doesn't work.

So what do you do?  Coaxials?  Yeah, that works.  I have those with passives.....excellent.

What else can we do?  Serious question...........reduce reflections?, pick the point of time alignment carefully, do the best we can and eliminate gross mis-alignments (I do this)?  I don't know the answer.  Just wondering what you guys think about it.

    Mark,

To my ear your 684 subs are dialed in perfectly with the MCM grand. (a monster system in the home environment)

I think that you hit the nail on the head on this one. We move step by step to achieve a goal.

To me the last step is to tune the room. I must admit that I am a selfish listener and could care less about dispersion. I don't walk around the room. My wife and I sit in a 5'wide sweet spot for dedicated listening. Anything less should be heard in the car...

    too much ???? smile

  3. "Ok what exactly am i looking at in your diagram? We are talking about khorns here."

    What part of

"Digital delay is the only fix."

    Didn't you understand?

What part of "If the horns are deeper than the woofer, then an all-pass delay will fix it." and "I've done the above (balanced) with dual 12's"

    Didn't you understand?

    But hey boss,..

Couldn't time alignment be achieved through cabinet design? '

Edit: Or steep slopes.....just saying that I have heard actives suck the life out of music

  4. Actually, I would like to know the ratio between Tube and SS amp owners who power their Klipsch's. We would be talking 2 channel, I imagine.

I would guess about 1:10 or maybe less.

    Bill

.....and then there are those of us that run both tubes and SS in our two channel systems.......

  5. Your old when you hurt yourself in your sleep. Waking up with something hurting that wasn't when you went to sleep.

    I hate when that happens.....

  6. I'm not sure how many people actually got to hear these things.  I was one who did though.  They were beasts.  I can still remember feeling the "Gs" on my face when JC played his bass heavy funk.  Incredibly clear and powerful.  Anyone would love the performance of these.  The only "defect" I detected.......and thitheys is very minor and me being very picky.........is that they were pretty directional.  It took all of about 2-3 tweaks with the aim, and you were done.  Very well designed.  Excellent sound.

I can say the only other bass cabinet that actually gave me that same face hurt was the Jub at the Klipsch lab.

JC's have dual 15s" though.  I think I heard a dual 12" version and then the bigger dual 15" if I remember right.

I know where they rest.  Dual K31's on board.  Trax tweet horns in place.  Mids to follow. Bet that they are up and running before years end.

  7. Turn down the tunes, and look for a house in the coutry, your hobby and this Apt aint going to work out, ya know this guy will likely call the cops next right?

Yeah your right....maybe after I retire, 8 more years, I'll find my place in Hailey Idaho...

Funny on the cop thing, if they were Omaha, I'd simply say "Do you want to sign in to network tomorrow"

beings I live in C/B not sure how this would go over...LMAO....

    OMG boys.....

Been in the country for the last 15 years and now moving into the burbs. Used to 118db short term bursts on the couch.  Gots ta love The Slam Factor!

  8. Why do I need gain in a preamp, is a passive right for me? I kind of sort of get the difference between passive and active preamps.  Actives have or introduce gain, while passives don't.  Well at least that is how I understand it, so my question to you guys is.  Would a passive work for me? Right now I am using an active crossover with my Crown D45 on the hf horns, and my McIntosh MC2100 on the bass bins.

Why am I thinking of switching to a passive you may? Well I have notice some issues with my tube preamp such as problems with the phono section, and cracks and pops all of sudden.  I wanted to eliminate the preamp, by using something simple.  Once I do that, I can take time to repair the tube preamp(or rob it for parts).  I guess I could do this by just hooking up an ipod or something a like directly to the active crossover.  Maybe I will give that a try once I get home this evening.  I guess in a since I am looking for a low cost alternative to purchasing a preamp, once I diagnosis the problem.  I only need 2 or 3 inputs, and once I pull my preamp apart I will turn it into a phono only preamp.

  9.

Perhaps it's simple ignorance on my part

Yes it is.  He was in the yardbirds.  Page and Beck from that time is very close.  Page went the hard core blues rock zeppelin way and Beck went the more jazz rock fusion way.  Beck is so much better than Gilmour it's not even a conversation.  Edit:  He is also so much better than Clapton.  It's his style, his tasty riffs, his sustain....so much more to say...suffice it that Santana and Beck are easily in the same league.

Oldtimer hit the mark..  Yardbirds!  Listen to that stuff, think of how old it is and what other types music was being offered at the time.

Check out "Jeff Beck Group"  '68 I think.  Nick Hopkins on piano and an unknown kid singer.......Rod somebody..

  10. There is a local classified ad consisting of the following:

one pair - 4x15' LF drivers, MF horn, HF horn 3amps and 2 Dx38 Processors. $3200.

    and,

one pair - 2x15' LF drivers, MF horn, HF horn 3amps and 2 Dx38 Processors. $2800

any thoughts on the quality / value of this equipment?

Just saw this.  OH MY! is right on the money.  Would be nice if it would work out for someone.

The 415-402-510 combo is in the top 5 big time two channel systems that I have listened to.  I have heard a few big ones.....

The plus is that this system can utilize passive networks without .....an active processor.... :emotion-14:

  11. I've had great results (even with the cheap Chinese unit) using a stepped attenuator direct from a CD player to a tube amplifier.

But the Chinese unit would "break before make" when switching between steps, and eventually jammed up and broke altogether.

So this time around I spent a few more bucks and went with a Goldpoint Mini-V level control.

I'll have to order some RCA input/output jacks, and wire it up, and pimp the enclosure out somehow.

I wanted to keep wire length as short as possible, hence the level control mounted in back, with a shaft to the control knob.

  12. Both drivers are impressive to say the least. I was blown away by the midrange performance of the three way Jubilee. I couldn't believe there were people in the room that actually still preferred the two way version - what a bunch of suck-ups.

Said with upmost respect and admiration to the Bone......

Too much Crank. I agree.  Smile.  Just loved the two way Jub with the K69 402!  Not so much with two way K69 510.

Was not head over heals with the K69 or the 510 horn in ether configuration.  Don't get me wrong... It was an outstanding sound!!!!  Second to ONE.

After I listened to the 1133 as a dedicated midrange driver on the K402 and the K69/510 as a dedicated tweeter........

    Just saying.....

  13. SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG FOR ME TO GET BACK TO YOU. YES YOU ARE CORRECT..... X OVER AT 500 USING CRITES A/4500 X OVERS. I DO NOT HAVE THE ALTCC 288 YET. I WANT TO KNOW IF THEY WILL SOUND BETTER THAN MY 81 ATLAS K55 IT IS THE BEST K55 EVER MADE.

As like Tom not sure how the 805 is throated.  If crossed at 500hz the 902 is very sweet in the upper mids.

  14. Here was a very interesting Klipschorn Signed by Bob Moers of Klipsch in the museum.

Looks like it had been a working modified test cabinet.

Here is links to a couple of stories with Bob involved:

    Mike,

The first link kind of freaks me.

In 1970 Bob Moers and wife VG-VeeGee(sp?) would travel to Fayetteville to party with my wife and I. We were still in school and they a bit older. At that time the UofA ranked Playboy's number one party school in the country. Fayettetnam as we called it was very different from Hope. smile

My best friend and audio mentor Cedric introduced us to the Moers and we hit it off.  That introduction provided my wife and I, a couple of poor college kids, some outrageous audio for the times. The day of Quad so we ran two Khorns flank, two LaS center and two LaS rear. Amps that were sent free to PWK for evaluation we had for a song.

Sorry for the trip down memory lane. Perhaps I should have PM'd.  But in the Klipsch logs that I have read I have never seen mention of a Cedric.

Just wonder where Bob Moers landed. Perhaps Hunter might have some memory of Cedric. (Kinker-Neal transmission line speakers)

I am told that Bill Brewly was close to suicide before finishing the Plex Khorn.

  15. How many besides me have regular "music nights"? A "music night" is defined as an entire evening dedicated to NOTHING other than sitting in the sweet spot, sipping a favorite libation, and listening to music. Absolutely nothing else. I like to have them 2 or 3 times a week when possible.

As for me last night was one. The first in a while considering a recent move. I've missed them. But I sincerely enjoyed last night. My neighbors? Well... Not so much. Too bad.

Last night was a mix of Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler, Carlos Santana, and Ottmar Liebert. Yes... I like "guitar" music.

For many years every Friday night my wife and I would dress as though we were going to a club. However, we would stay in, run up the SPL's and sometimes listen until 4:00 or 5:00am.

  16. Bob is NOT a nice guy. He is a despicable old coot that makes sport of short people.

But his offerings are innovative and very cost effective. All done within the principles of PWK's thinking.

    Service is second to none.

    Metro,

Headphones simply can't produce "The Slam Factor."   Impact.  Like a boot to the chest at volume.

My wife describes our two-channel system as .....Physical.......

    tc

I'm well aware of how kick drums to the chest feels and enjoy it quite a bit, but that doesn't seem to be how most audiophiles listen to stuff, many tend to match the volume with that of a live UNAMPLIFIED performance and even if they have a sub they go to great lengths to make sure you never know it's there. No reason why headphones can't do this if that's how you listen to stuff. If you're a fan of shaking the house with subs then yeah I understand completely, but that doesn't seem to usually be the case with serious listeners.

I run DBB bass bins like Mark 1101's.  There is no need for a sub.

But I do understand what you say.  Too many 2-channel listeners misuse Subs. They should be used as a seamless fill and not dominate.... just to shake the walls.

Very few subs sound musical to me in the home system.  Music is more demanding than say a gas truck exploding.

Big 2-channel systems are like owning a hot sport car to me.  Not always, but there are times that ya just gotsta to punch it!

    sorry for any hijack Mike

  18. A friend is looking at purchasing one of these and is looking for impressions, pros and cons.  I think it's the newest model, version 4?  Beautiful units, another Mc work of art so to speak.  Do these units almost demand a tube preamp to go along with them, or are they compatible with SS preamps?  I've never had a Mc, so I don't know.  Any input would be great.  thanks.

    http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/us/Products/pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=amplifiers&ProductId=MC275B

They are very sweet IMHO.  Listened to them on an excellent Khorn setup and they gave the corner horns all they wanted.  Then in a big 4-way system...

...and they become a beast when bridged....

  19. " Anyway, my question is, why wouldn't most serious two-channel listeners be perfectly happy with a high end set of headphones? It would be a hell of a lot cheaper and easier, no room acoustics to dink with, no dedicated room, no huge subs, no WAF, no expensive power amps, etc., etc., etc. What exactly is there to gain from a high-end single-seat dedicated two-channel setup that a real nice set of headphones can't provide? I've heard details on headphones that I have never heard anywhere else and cannot reproduce for the life of me. What are you chasing beyond that?"

  20. I have systems with K-33, Crites stamped, and Crites cast.  I can't really tell the difference between the K-33 and Crites stamped.  The stamped were Crites original woofer designed to be a replacement K-33.  My personal opinion is that it is excellent and serves the purpose.

When Bob moved to the cast frame there was a lot of promotion about how much sturdier they are and better sounding.  I definitely do not agree and I know I am in the minority.  But........I do have 3 systems all running simutaneously in teh same room where you can clearly here what I am stating.

The cast have a slight boom that neither the stamped nor K-33 have.  The cast are not as smooth as the others.  This is clear to me.

But if you ask everyone they say the cast sound better.  I say they sound different.  YMMV. :)

    Stallion,

Knowing you for your good ear it's difficult for me to disagree....but I do in this case.

My four Crites cast in the DBB's are well seasoned and broken in.  Ran two K33's in one channel and the cast in other for fun.  (an easy A/B)

Both sets of drivers were roughly the same age.

At volume the K33's had more boom and didn't have quite the control of the cast frame...    For lack of better words, the K33's were a bit "floppy" to my ear.

    just me ...........
