  1. i was going to ask about Quicksilver; but, got lazy.  They don’t get mentioned in a lot of discussions. Bay Area was home to some good artists.

Quicksilver Messenger Service doesn't get mentioned as do many others. It was underground and counter-culture.

Not much air time for those groups. When was the last time you heard a Moby Grape cut on the radio? LMBO!

  2. Nice one Travis...what a cast of characters at that one.  I like Steve Miller as well. I wonder if Timothy Leary took anything that day?

In that day I think it was Steve Miller Blues Band.??? Back then music from Steve Miller was not the "top forty" stuff that most people remember him for. It was much harder.

  3. That is very sad. I saw them once when they were Airplane, and many, many times as Starship, Hot Tuna and Purple Sage

were you living in "The City" during the Summer of Love?  (not sure how old you are, so don't be offended if that was before your day).

Talking to my brother the other night and told him that i would have loved to have been part of the Haight/Ashbury scene. I was a few years too young. He said he could have gotten into that as well.

You didn't ask me, but I lived in Oakland and spent much of my time in Berkeley and the Haight.  I loved the FREE concerts in Golden Gate Park and in Provo park (Berkeley).  Many name bands participated, nc the Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, etc., etc.  One time (fourth of July) the mayor closed Haight St. to auto traffic, and the bands set up at the end of the street (where it dead ended into Stanyan at the park entrance).  People in the street and along the rooftops danced, as the rays of the setting sun streamed across the street.  In an earlier post I wrote about how the dirt jumped off of the sidewalk in rhythm.

You and Trav force me to date myself.

I was 17 and all about the music, the chemicals and the positive effects on our society .

Country Joe, Velvet Underground, Moby Grape, Mc5,Quicksilver,etc.

  4. I am now using the Cornscala D style. Before that I had the Cornwall III. I like the sound of both but prefer the larger horn in the D. The Crites woofer seems to have a little more punch also. Nothing against the Cornwall III, just needs a better horn since it is the same one used in the Heresy III which I also have.

"Nothing against the Cornwall III, just needs a better horn"

Now lets not just pick on the Cornwall III. It is genetic. EVERY Cornwall (1,2 or 3)needs a better horn! smile

That need inspired the bastard birth of Cornscala.

  5. I have to volunteer here a vote for 3 way as well, and ask the OP if he already heard 2-way and prefers it.........or if this is an experiment based on things read on this forum.

I've heard most of the 2-way setups JC mentioned and have had my own for a few years up to recently when I converted it to a 3-way.  It simply boils down to personal preference.

I look at 2-way like this.............It's possible.  It works.  It sounds good..........AND.........it never sounded as good as 3-way to me.  I tried numerous different drivers, crossovers, passive, active, bass cabinets, amps, preamps, tubes, s/s..........you name it.  I gave it its chance.  I used the 402.  Thank heavens I acquired some 510s to fashion tweeters on them so I could enjoy the full potential of the speaker system.

My number 1 (and only really) complaint about 2-way is that while you can measure the FR to full extension, you simply don't get the same high end emphasis you get with a tweeter.

    But again, it's personal preference.

I would get the eliptrac because you can add a tweeter easier to it if you ever decide to.  it will also be easier to manage within a conventional setup as JC and Dean mention.

I have listened to 2-way 510/K69's on several different bass bins and was not overly impressed with horn or driver.

Then heard the 510/K69 in 3-way. Man that combo can TWEET!

3-way is my preference as well. But I wonder. Could age be a factor in that preference?

Example: Some of our (ahumm) older forum members that mod run JBL 2404's wide open on 102db bass bins. ???

  6. Never heard the d150.  It is because I've been told on more than I occasion that it sounds terrible.  The d45 and d75a are wonderful.  I have both.

I heard a funny comment one time here on the forum.  "You shouldn't attempt to sell your Crown d150.  In fact, you shouldn't give it away either."

"Old and cold" "Don't give it away. Throw it away"

  7. Certainly sound as good or better than the last pair.

I don't have it all tidy yet.  Quick hook-up to drop in 1200 wpc for the break in. :D

    Getting my head around this.....

Build the second set of Cornscala's. Cross them high and run some different horns and drivers.. Cool.

Finished the project and want to listen to them. "well let's see what amps I can put in there to ear test"

How 'bout a couple of 1.2KW Mac mono blocks". They were handy. smile

  8. What a ringing endorsement.  This guy needs a few pointers from someone in marketing.

"For a pair of speakers, these speakers sound as good as any other speaker."

    LOL

"sound as good as any other"

Wow! Wish I had known that before spending all the money.

  9. For me it's about the information........and the proof of performance.  The "I know exactly what I am getting".  That means a lot to me.

I can get past the rudeness.

There is rarely any solid information like this brought forward from experts on this forum anymore.

So I am enjoying this thread.

I'd rather spend my time reading posts written by people that know what they are talking about........and that I know I can trust.

Well said Stallion. Getting back into the forum with this thread.

  10. The CP 25's at $110-$120 a piece, may be the best bang for the buck out there.  They need to be attenuated a bit, -3 to -5, but they bring a lot to the table.

Really?  I didn't care much for it.

Well just think that I will continue with my JBL 2404's smile However they were expensive NIB.

The old JBL it replaced was far better.

Because I build and sell wood lenses I cant comment too much, but I prefer to listen to mylar diaphragms.

  11. Yea Mike. That room with the universals had a low ceiling....basement....k horns on a short wall in a long room. Very good false walls/corners built onto the khorns. Killer bass that I attribute to the room. The airy mids maybe from the network...not sure. Great system.

The detail and seperation more noted on the ESN system. To my liking....some may not.

All other times I've heard khorns...I'm assuming Klipsch factory.

    :

    ......

I also apologize to JW but his network originality/design led into an informative discussion.

Too many factors there for me to say that the nets were responsible for listening to the best Khorns I ever heard.

Closed backs, wooden trax mid horns with basketball sized Altec drivers, Bi-radial tweets. MC275's.....

The room was great with hard corners but I like a little more separation smile

    Hey tc

Hope your doing good and thanks for adding more details.... :)

    You too Mike.

I am pleased to see a little life back in this old place!

Must think that I would need some sort of A/B to assess the boards.

  13. That's why tubes and horns are such a good mix.[/quote

Tubes cover the flaws that horns find.  That's why some like tubes with horns.

    [/quot

Timer, that is one of the more honest and correct answers that I have seen here in a long time.

To my ear most SS amps have a harsh grain quality and can honk with horns. That said, there are SS power amps that have tube sounding properties.

I like the sound of that kind of SS power amps with a tube preamp and tube buffered CDP.

Horns don't require tube amps to sound good but tubes do cure many ills.

  14. I am curious about that material John, does it solidify somewhat, like rubber?

Dear God man it's just RTV (Dow Corning 732) Black

(Christ, next time I'll use Grey).

I'm of the less technical here so bear with me.  Is this structural, to reduce vibration or have some other purpose?

  16. Hello everyone.

Does anyone know what the original cost of these speakers were when sold? A business in town got some in but they do not have a clue what they are going to sell them for. Does anyone know what a good offer price be for just the stack of speakers on the cart?

    Thanks. :)

    Welcome to this place.

Not sure what is a good price. Depends on the number of working drivers. You will want to check that out and that they are of the

    proper Klipsch design.

Know that this is not a "plug & play" system......But to hear them in a living room environment....They are just devastating
