  1. Trust me -- slinging solder can get tedious. DIY is a great path to great sound -- but it's extremely time consuming.
  2. They don't make 'em like they used to. Well, some do - but who can afford them?
  3. Don't let these Heritage Freaks beat you down! Well, you certainly don't need any help in the bass department. A vintage Scott 299A or B is just really hard to beat for the money, and your budget is right at the mark for one. 20 watts of pentode on those RP-3's is just about right. In one little nifty box -- you get a tube preamp, a tube amp, tube rectification, tone controls, and a balance knob. What else does an old school two channel dude really need?
  4. A few people I would love to get into that chair: Leo Craig Kelly BobG Person I think I would have to drag out from under the chair: Kelly
  5. Edmond's Gold Cary SLP-90. Well, it was gold -- until it started driving me nuts looking at it. So, a call to the 'Had Gang' for a new faceplate and knobs. Not bad, $105 and I got a new look that fits in better with the rest of the gear. Yes, I think this preamp will be with me until it melts down.
  6. As is my custom -- when I think I'm done -- you know -- before I start selling off to try something different again. I think the Quicksilvers will be around a while. The RF-7's like them.
  7. I ran a 299a with some Heresies a while back. I'm sure you'll find it works quite well. Poor Craig -- he's never gonna get caught up.
  8. You have to keep the sensitivity up to keep pace with that horn right? Plus, since there isn't a squawker, and the crossovers are kind of high in these designs -- lighter cones are better for the midrange.
  9. I'm a closet big 'ole Japanese amp freak. Just about anything made them weighing more than 60 lbs. usually pumps out some serious stuff.
  10. Well sure, you're not going after major output here with these things - you're going after more coherency by not splitting the signal and running it through passive crossover parts, and then of course trying to bring the whole mess into some kind of listenable balance. Tom is right, IM would be terrible at anything above 80db -- however, they might sound really sweet late at night after everyone goes to bed. I'm also thinking these might be especially sweet with SET. It's a marriage made in heaven -- wimpy speakers with wussy amps. The nice thing about the Super 12's is that they play low enough -- and the highs are augmented by a super tweeter
  11. No, not at all. I design networks for the government. I'd love to show you one of my designs -- but then of course, I would have to kill you and take all of your Telefunkens.
  12. You must be referring to my weekend job. Yeah, it's nice -- but since I have to work 24 hours out the 48 hour weekend, I mind as well do something constructive with my time while I wait for the network to crash.
  13. The KR's are the best tubes in the world. Sure wish they made an EL-34. Randy, UPS site is still showing "Billing Information Received" on the 5692's I dropped off at Mailboxes E. I'm starting to worry UPS didn't see our little box. I'm going to call them here in a few minutes.
  14. Thanks everyone -- much appreciated. Mark Deneen tackled this one some time ago for me, but I couldn't remember the details of his post, and didn't have the sense to bookmark it.
  15. Yeesh, it's not like I went out to The Net looking for caulked baskets. I was reading some Dick Olsher Reviews at Enjoythemusic.com and fell into the link for the Single Driver Website, and just kind of went around the horn so to speak. Looks like I gave Maron chest pains again. Thanks Tom, that's pretty much what I figured -- but I bet some of that stuff sounds pretty sweet at low volume levels (as if I actually know anything about THAT). Artto -- you're a wiener. I listen to plenty of music -- but I'm not sure if that's what you would call it.
  16. That's right -- spend $7K on a set of Klipschorns, and then upgrade from a Kenwood to a 15 year old, $60 integrated off of eBay. Puhleeez.
  17. Well, it depends on from where to where -- but dave just emailed me and said Forward Air estimated $60 from Dayton, Ohio to Portland, Oregon.
  18. Bumped for Dave -- who wanted to see what the inside of the Vault looked like. Don't worry Mike -- I told him when he's done with it, he has to ship it to you when you're ready. Consider this thing the Offical Klipsch Forum Member's Cornwall Shipping Container. My small payback to what this forum has contributed to my joy!
  19. BTW -- I wanted to thank you for changing your avatar -- the old one used to trigger siezures.
  20. Damn Danny, you're stealing my thunder! I can't remember how many Danny ended up using -- but yeah, to do a pair of Cornwalls ain't cheap. To do it "right" -- 80% of the interior needs to be covered. I would think with a smaller speaker this is probably overkill, but I think with a speaker like the Cornwall, well -- it needs all the help it can get. I will be completely covering the back panel, as well as the top and bottom. I'm going to leave the sides alone, for this is where I am going to install the cross-brace.
  21. I have been interested in this kind of thing for some time -- anyone here ever been there done that? I'm particularly intriqued by John Wycoff's Super 12 design (Hammer Dynamics). http://www.hammerdynamics.com/ A really interesting site is James Melhuish's Single Driver Website. http://www.melhuish.org/audio/index.htm On the left hand side of the page you will see a little more than 1/2 way down a link for 'Super 12 Tweaks'. I found out that I'm certainly not alone regarding my thoughts on woofer basket damping and Deflex panels. At any rate -- there are a lot of interesting things to read on this site.
  22. Since it comes up here on occasion -- I thought some of you might find this of interest. http://members.aol.com/sbench102/caps.html
  23. I posted about that two weeks ago. Man, you better lay off the solder fumes for a while.
