You can plug the Zamp into any of the channels you want. Doing so is a start toward a separates system using decent amps instead of the (probably shi##y) ones in the Pioneer. Eventually the Pioneer can become just a pre-amp / source switch. (BTW, 30 clean RMS Watts is a lot of juice for small speakers.) But second, I'm unclear on what you plan for future HT? You proposed configurations use *only* the Revo as a source. Aren't you going to have other sources like HDTV tuner? cable or satellite box? broadcast or satellite radio tuner? DVD player? etc etc? How do you plan to handle those?
  2. Cool. I'm learning something here. Hmmm. Just looked at the Pioneer you mentioned. It has 7.1 input - looks like analog. You already have one? So what was the issue again? That you need a second set of 7.1 for the Revo card?
  3. I'm interested in this too. The Quintets aren't the answer for the rear and surrounds.
  4. I don't think there's a good answer. (Hopefully someone will prove me wrong.) You can have the 5.1 system by going into powered speakers. Promedia GMX D-5.1 runs about $240 from newegg.com, so that's your price point. Sounds pretty good too. But it takes the digital output (presumably the Klipsch DAC isn't awful). ProMedia Utra 5.1 takes the 6 discrete outputs, but runs $390. It's probably the way I'd go for a 5.1 computer system. But then how to turn it into a HT system for other sources? Wish I knew.
  5. Don't know. Never AB'd them. If they're both options to buy, you should be able to AB them. If the klf's aren't available, then the question is meaningless.
  6. I wouldn't worry about the impedance. 4 ohms isn't that big a deal. It does suggest a different level of efficiency between the 4 and 8 ohm speakers that might take some balancing out, there should be no problem presented to the amp(s). The Revo is a nice card! I'm not clear on what you're trying to do. I have one of mine plumbed into a receiver as a (stereo) source. The other is driving a powered speaker system. If you're thinking like me that you'd like to drive a n.1 HT system, I'm not sure that there's a way to do it using the discrete channel outs. Haven't seen a preamp/receiver that accepts n+1 channels in. Probably have to run the digital out into a receiver. Which kinda defeats the purpose, IMHO. Why bypass one of the best DACs you have?
  7. The "watts" rating of a speaker doesn't have a dang thing to do with anything. If that's what your vendor is using as a selling point, go somewhere else. While things like efficiency (how loud for the amount of juice) and amp matching are considerations, the only thing that really matters is how they sound. RFs are a good speaker and will probably do well in your room. Good luck!
  8. Whoa! Those are some impressive pages. IMO that kind of quality translates to the buy price.

  11. I'm not familiar with the RX-V3300, but I've used other (probably older) Yamaha surround gear and I generally wasn't impressed with their DSPs. Way too heavy-handed. Like they were designed to show well in a noisy HiFi Buys demo room. I hear their more recent DSPs are better, but in general I don't like synthesized effects. You might try borrowing a pair of speakers to check it out, but I'd consider it a risk to invest not knowing the result to expect.
  12. Uhhh.. What if I don't like Rush? (well most of it) ??
  13. ---------------- I'll trade you my oak academy for you black academy + $400. ---------------- Actually, the plan is: 1) Buy oak Academy for $400 2) Sell black Academy on eBay 3) Profit!!!
  14. I managed to get a black one on eBay for $400, which is in fact the lowest I've seen since I started watching. I have to say it matches the sensitivity and timbre of the Fortes very well. I'm quite happy with it. But would I have spent more? Not without trying something like an RC center (or a pair of Heresys) first. Unfortunately, the demand on eBay is going to drive up the price elsewhere. (BTW, note that the winning bidder bid *over* $635 yesterday and stood up to all the last-minute snipe attempts today. Your $700 bid might not have won!) So given that they command this much $$, why isn't Klipsch making them? I'd love to switch to Oak for $400.
  15. I built a Dynaco PAS-2 lo! these many years past. Closest thing to a straight wire with gain I've ever heard. Gold plated contacts would have been very nice (they tended to get some corrosion). Decent phono eq - better then my cartridge. I was driving a mono home-built 2-way: folded corner horn based on an old Jensen (2D where the KH is 3D), and 800 Hz x-over to single horn above (amking it nearly 6' tall). Altec-Lansing Voice of the Theater components (15" sub). In a room with an actual corner and some good deep bass source, this thing could make the building shake! And driving it? A 15W tube amp. For the life of me I don't recall the brand. Heath?
