  1. I liked N. Riddle's music, but Ronstadt's "Crazy" wasn't in the same league as Patsy Cline's. Maybe some of her other stuff is good.
  2. While I've listened to my Khorns for many years, I've only heard one pair of LaS's, but the difference on bass was like night and day. I simply could not live with LaS's without a subwoofer-the pair I heard, along a wall, simply would not get down to what *I* consider bass-anything below ~50 Hz. But LaS's with a good sub would probably be great. I also converted my AA's to A's and would never return to the muted tweeters of the AA's. I'd rather buy a bunch of spare tweeters should the need ever arise (unlikely, I think). Can't wait to assemble 2 DHAXOVERS-Ver.2's and try them-and the 1 mF cap mod. to the AA's. Also, not having any rope caulk handy I tried deadening the mid-horn with some big bags of silica gel I had. Not as good a treatment as the rope, I'm sure, but I can't hear any diff. so far.
  3. Anyone know where I can get about 6 of these fuseholder end caps (or whatever they're called)? It's a stupid design, very prone to failure of the tiny metal tab that locks it to the fuse holder. Thanks, Benesesso
  4. Here in Italy we eat PORK that ain't even been cooked! Of course it's special, comes from special hogs in Parma. No tricnosis (or however you spell it) to worry about. Did I say how good it tastes?
  5. I'd like to build a couple of these X-overs. Anyone know of a good place to buy all/most of the parts? I'll need to round up as much as I can the middle on Jan. 2004-returning to Florida for a few days from my long term assignment in Italy. Benesesso
  6. Room size 13' X 26'? Not good at all-a multiple. Do you hear the strong bass peak from the reinforcement? Should be right around 80 Hz. Different places will have much stronger peaks than others.
  7. Yes, I've been reading. So far all I have done is convert the AA's to A's--much better on the high end, where I probably can't hear too well anyway. But for the first time I could easily hear and ID that a tambourine was used on one of my fav. songs, "The King Must Die" by Elton John, "Live in Australia" CD. So, I am somewhat reluctant to change back to the AA and add the cap., but I am going to do it-it's easy enough. I got some caps. from work--the electronics tech. told me they were 1 mFd, and "probably poly". They are little rectangular white plastic caps, about 1" X 5/8" X 1/4". No markings except for 1J250, whatever that means. I don't have a cap. tester-maybe I should ask him to measure them. I'm also going to wrap the squawkers with the heaviest rope-tape I can find. Wish I had them back at my nuke plant in AZ-the vibration guy could excite them and tell me just how they ring before and after. But that's about 3 years away. BTW, I read a nice writeup about all of Altec's VOTT equipment, and the writer said that both the Altec 811B and 511B horns "ring like cowbells", so if I manage to get a pair I'll wrap them too. Tube amps-never did get any replies about driving a Paraglow with my Crown SL-1 SS preamp, but I see that the Foreplay tube preamp is not too expensive, even with the extras. BUT, in order to get all that (Foreplay and Paraglows) over here to Italy will be a little problem. I don't find that crossing over from the Khorns to my huge Earthquakes causes any muddying. I've tried it both ways, and I MUST have the strong low end that I've never gotten from the Khorns alone. I set the crossover at 40-50 Hz-don't know the rolloff rate, but it works well there. Any higher and it does get muddy. BUT, most music has nothing way down there-usually just organs, electronic stuff and the lowest notes on doublebasses. But when it's there it's great-almost religious!
  8. Al, and others, All these great posts have really made me rethink things. It is finally dawning on me WHY, other than cost, do so many of you have beautiful Belles and er, uh, functional La Scalas instead of Khorns. Belles and La Scalas probably sound better WITH a sub than Khorns-with or w/o subs. So, I'm thinking of getting a pair of either and also using an Altec 511B mid horn, crossed over fairly low-starting around 300-325 Hz. I wonder what driver to use on them- Altecs, JBL or Klipsch?
  9. Belles-beautiful speakers. What did you use to dampen them? I could have one of the welders here weld some stiffeners on the outside, and build a strong, stiff steel frame around them--or just surround them with something dense--and well attached. Naturally I'm now also interested in the Altec 500 horns-had a pair a long time ago in my pre-Khorns days. Didn't realize how good they were, but I did know how awful the big wooded boxes were!
  10. Thanks, Al. I think I will try it both ways and report here what it sounds like-to me. I also found the excellent thread on different squawker horns, etc. It's all SO interesting and informative. The issue of horn ringing has also made me think-someone else reported that he found that deadening the 400 horn helped. I am going to see about coming up with something to REALLY deaden them-just short of pouring concrete around 'em. Might also try to pick up a pair of Altec horns when I'm back there. Benesesso
  11. OK. I'm right in the middle of returning to the 4-0 taps from the 3-0. But what config. will sound "better"-AA w/this cap., or the A with it's more power-to-the-tweeter than the AA-at least until I get yours? Benesesso?
  12. OK, so what do I do to a pair of AA's that I just converted to A's? Benesesso
  13. Al, Thanks for the reply. Maybe I had misunderstood about moving the taps on the autoformer--does that advice only apply to your crossovers? Also, I will be returning to the US for a week the middle of January, and that's when I want to pick up some new audio gear--probably a pair of your crossovers and some SET amps. How long does it take you to ship out a pair-to Florida? Benesesso
  14. OK, I got it figured out. Converted both from AA to A, and used the 3-0 tap. WHAT a difference! More than I dared hope for. Benesesso
  15. Al, Before I break down and order a pair of your crossovers, I want to play with my AA's on my old Klipschorns. I read a post by you about connecting the squawker to taps 5 and 2 IF the 4-0 and 3-0 don't work for someone's ears. Now, try not to laugh, but there are a bunch of wires already on the 5 tap-by the time I trace them all I've forgotten where the first ones go(yes, I'm not too bright at times). SO, WHAT wires go to which taps? I've also read someone's post about converting an AA to an A, but I need a little more info. They said to "go from term. 5 to one of the 2 mF caps. and then directly to the tweeter terminal. This will bypass the second 2 mF cap ---." What does this mean? Does term. 5 get connected to the cap and the SAME wire then goes to one of the tweeter terminals, and no other wires remain hooked up to tap 5 OR the cap. terminal? Thanks, Benesesso
  16. Q-man, Do you still have your ALK's? Benesesso
  17. Need a pair of ALK's for my old Klipschorns w/AA crossovers. Thanks, Benesesso
