  1. Since when is "compression" lossy? Mp3, ogg, acc etc. "convert" digital audio. Lossless codecs compress; tacky lack of attention to detail on the author's part Slim Devices rock, well, the squeezebox does. I'm using a Saitek Wireless (rf xmitter really) speaker for my son's room, cheap solution and it works okay with good enough sound. I'm actually considering adding an Apple Airport Express to extend my wi-fi network in the house and stream music to an IGroove now that Airport can be used with Windows & Linksys routers. The SlimDevice Transporter is tempting, but then you need another amp and speakers, and it seems overpriced. The Roku Radio is a nice all in one solution, but it must be controlled from the remote via UPnP; the Transporter allows dig. input so it could act as another zone to output direct signal to, but if you connect it via ethernet you accessing your archived library via the Transporter; Ialways prefer the interface and endless options of J. River Media Center. I can browse album covers, make smartlists, make playlists, etc. 2K for a way to move your digitzed files around is a joke. Get a Turion 800$ laptop and then you can have full access to your audio library via J. River Media Center via wi-fi, add an external soundcard & hard wire something to the laptop or add an Airport Express and it will sound like 2K. Dr. C
  2. The Sunfire Premp has been working nicely to archive vinyl using an EMU1212m soundcard. I would, however, like to get a hotter signal with the most optimal method (wouldn't mind a touch more gain from the phono overall for listeing through RF-7s). For recording, I use the Tape out which is independent of the main volume control of the preamp, -10db since it is unbalanced RCA>1/4". I have three options: 1. Use software gain as implemented by the EMU Patchmix software. There is the possability that the digital headroom is not being used (emu is 24bit hardware I think) and "bits are being thrown away". Not sure about all this but the consenus on a few forums was that EMU needs to be asked specifically how they handle their software trim pots. I record currently at 32bit float/44kHz. 2. Get someone to do the prescribed resistor change to boost phono preamp gain. Probably the best option. 3. Use balanced audio cables, XLR main outs of the Sunfire preamp -which are in the main volume circuit of the pre- and use the +4db Pro setting on the EMU. If I get enough gain w/o having to crank the volume knob on the pre, is this a feasible solution, and would the benefits of XLR make it worthwhile. thanks Dr. Cilantro

I am biting my lip because I have put a lot of time and effort into configuring it according to all the great advice on Aximsite.com. With 4 PC's at home I can't justify yet another one which is with me all of the time; to much other stuff needs to get done. WARRANTY (2YEAR LIMITED) IS TRANSFERRABLE (purchased about 3 months ago). The manual states we simply have to inform Dell of the transaction. This x51v is near mint; clean screen and no marks or scratches & you get a TON of extras. includes: * Axim x51v * USB Cradle * Adapter connector * Rhinoskin (black rubber) case (awesome because you can lay the x51v against a book on a desk, at an angle, and it won't slip down) * Seagate 8gb CF II Microdrive * Car charger and adapter * Radioshack FM transmitter (8 frequencies/battery powered or by car adapter) * (2) AC adapter & localized power cord (one for USB cradle & separate one for workplace/backpack) * (3) Standard battery (1100 mAh) * Documentation * (2) Stylus' Your choice of hard reset software currently installed; to summarize the chargers you get: the USB cradle with its AC adapter, the car charger & its plug to connect it to the Axim, AND an extra AC adapter that has the plug to connect it to the Axim. 6. Will Klipsch sell a set of spikes to me or there some available that work for the RF-7's. Any Hw-19 users out there that have fitted their HW-19 with spikes that fit the exisitng threads. IIRC they are about 1/4". thanks Dr. C
  7. I have a 6ft run of Zaolla Silverline 1/4" > RCA that I have been trying to part with. PM me if interested. v/r Dr. C
  8. Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I am using a Sunfire Classic pre. The +4 is always mentioned in terms of "pro" gear i.e. balanced xlr cables and the like I have tried the +4 into the pre and it sounds okay, going the other way, as I said the sound card can't deal with it. I'll try playing with it some more. thanks so much JC
  9. Can anyone clarify if running +4 out of a soundcard with 1/4">RCA cables into a tube pre-amp is safe? Someone is trying to tell me it is and my impression (or experience) is that when you try to boost input to the card from the pre by switching to +4 you actually get a drop in volume (impd. mismatch?), I'm wondering if this is a way to squeeze out a hotter signal w/o using the software on the card. Due to Replay Gain being wacky it's a pain to use software faders...but that's neither here nor there. What exactly is the danger of a +4 signal running into a Sunfire tube pre? thanks! Dr. C
  10. Run of the mill HW-19jr., Grado Sonata 4.5mv, JS Electrostatic Air Bearing tonearm. I bought the player and arm for 400$; I run the air pumps in the closet in a box. It needs a lot of care to setup but once it is it's a lot of fun. I use my rig a lot for archiving old & rare records. I have the homemade record cleaner in the closet (modified 1hp shopvac & broken Kenwood TT) and the system connects to the HTPC. I keep realizing, the analog v.s digital archive argument is null since I can't play an out of print record on my cd player. Listening to all the classical I picked up at 2nd hands around here as well as reggae, jazz, blues, rock n roll. keep spinning Dr. C should be some close up picks of the arm in here: http://www.catuccio.net/web/index.html http://www.catuccio.net/IMG_0123small.bmp
  11. I've been eyeing RTR players lately in the second hand music stores around here, may just have to pick one up. One thing that comes to mind amidst the mention of "not going back to vinyl" or "moving forward to cd"...seems like putting all your eggs in one basket. One does it have to be one or the other...I guess if your not spinning it, yes that makes sense. For me, I NEED my vinyl rig.....how many out of print wonders will I find in the next year? For collectors, vinyl will NEVER be outdated as long as we are looking for pieces to archive. I have the HTPC hooked into the tube pre and tube Quicksilver amps. Old tech & new tech in symbiosis. The TT lets me archive those juicy rare 45's I pull off of Ebay. The RTR will let me play my uncle's old reels and see what all the huff is about. I am not going to archive every LP but a terabyte of cd's and some choice vinyl as I see fit....why not? Best of both worlds.... JCatuccio aka Dr. Cilantro

  13. tightened up nicely. The Captain is on the prowl, I hear he is developing a .077 watt SET amplifier which he will house in a modded & modernized gun metal grey Scott 299B chassis...he has hopes for it and his agent (his mom) is currently ironing out a deal with QVC's Eastern Europe partner DOA who offered to provide 3 tons of orange drops pulled from destitute Conn organs that were confiscated by The State during the era of the Iton Curtain. I'll check tonight on the dimensions, and hit you back. You'd have to find a shelf for it because I lost the one that came with it. You could use anything of course. The closet was sold early this morning, they are coming to rip it out later today. Dr. C
  14. Does anyone have a clue what this artifact is?: A horizontal ripple (stretching across the screen left to right) traveling from the bottom of the screen to the top. Happens at random times; does not have to be action shot but seems to happen only when watching video. This would occur on both DVI & VGA connection. Using a DFI NF3 w/ Gigabyte 6600 via VGA. Machine is oc'd 95mHz but prime & memtest stable. Card is no oc'd. Display is a 32" Olevia LCD. Driver is the 78.03. Thoughts: This occurs with DVD video as well as .avi etc. LOTR looks really good except for this @#$@%# ripple! I was getting a lot of tearing and activated the vettical sync to be Always On and the tearing went away....the picture became so much more stable. The ripple, however, remains. I need to test with a standalone DVD player on the same circuit as everything else. Try a different driver. I am running FWrites on and 8x AGP in the bios. Don't know what the aperture is set at. I haven't tried to shut down some processes yet, but I think I set Hardware Accelration down a notch. I will make a definitive test tongiht using J. River Media Center/Nvidia DVD decoder(VMR9) and using Zoom Play Pro/Dscaler5(VMR9). I noticed this artifact on both DVI and VGA, quality seemed the same and I could achieve the native 1:1 pixel ratio with VGA so I stuck with it. I have Klispch RF-7's pretty close to the LCD. (see link in sig). I tipped one in real close while playing a dvd and didn't see any effects on the monitor, but they are shielded anyway: "The new Reference Series flagships 1.75" titanium dome compression driver is coupled to an 8" square Tractrix® Horn and powered by an unusually large, video-shielded 22oz. magnet." I know the artifact occurs while audio components are on but have to check about when turned off. The circuit is not overload because the electrician was here and I was pulling 4 amps on a 15amp circuit with everything on. There is no dimmer in the room, but maybe in the other room which IS on the same 15amp curcuit. I really want to get rid of this artifact because it is driving me CRAZY. thanks for all your help everyone. dR. C
