  1. No, I mean static...hiss is a better word. It comes in and cuts right out at the specified locations. Jon
  2. My brother has owned a 4.1 setup for a couple years and I was building him a new PC the other day when I noticed something strange. The volume control on the 4.1 has a static spot from about 8:00 to 1:00; just like on some older amp you might have lying around. Is this a known defect with Promedias? thanks, Jonathan Catuccio
  3. Hi all, I just got an email from a friend regarding some large lawsuit involving 18 companies selling grey market Klipsch. I think he said he read it in the July issue of Stereophile and that I need to get Klipsch to verify my serial numbers..... anyone know anything about this...? DC
  4. I remember reading that upsampling was not a very effective method overall; your results seem to illustrate that as well. Recording or archiving your vinyl AT 24/96 is essential; from what I have gathered at least use 24/44, 24/48, etc. While I don't have a DVD-A player and don't forsee getting one for a long time, my procedure with rig in sig is as follows: Record to HD w/ Wavelab or similar. Dehiss, denoise, edit, etc. only if needed. I don't mess with Eq'ing whatsoever. (I usually have Wavelab auto-insert track lines between tracks.) Break the file up into individual tracks since I am archiving. Next, compress the 29/96 files into MAC (Monkey's Audio Compression) and save in my archive (which I can still listen to while compressed). This way I still keep the original 24/96 master copies intact on the HD. Burning to cd could be done simultaneously to cd in 16/44 with my cd player/recorder but burning DVD-A audio to dvd-rom is an option in Wavelab 5.0 I believe. But, I will probably save that chore for a day when dvd audio players are more prevelent. Since my PC is part of my stereo....which works PERFECTLY and sounds great btw... the tube hiss was because I had a hidden attenuator knob turned down on the DEE JAY (oh no!) mixer and my ratios were all screwed up. My mixer has a digital out and is connected to my Denon cd player/recorder via digital...i think it's a 24/48 connection. Maybe one option would be to simply playback the wave in 24/96 with Wavelab and record via digital to cd. Storage is ridiculousy huge for 24/96 pcm audio...I advise anyone to look into the various lossless compression schemes out there.

  6. I have been vaguely eyeing the Bottlehead Seduction as well, there are some funny submissions over there..." I had tears running down my face" : D ~DC~
  7. Hey all, Just curious what are people using for external phono stages. I am using a Grado Reference Sonata (4.8mv) and I am looking at the Grado Ph-1. I had considered the Gram Amp 2 SE but I can't find it for under 415$ shipped. I can get the Grado for 431$ shipped and it has more flexability; that it seems to be highly lauded as well. I have a lot of vinyl, it's my birthday, so I am going for it.... Anyone have experience with either of these two...I have pretty much narrowed it down to them. I have previously owned a NAD PP2 (SS) & the ASL mini-phono (tube) standing on the edge of the diving board, ~DC~
  8. Okay okay no hard feelings....I have to lighten up I guess, and let it go. You did call me aromatic after all! : ) Enjoy the music! DC
  9. Thanks for the advice on amps. Since we are moving soon, I won't be making a purchase right away. Colin, your a hypocrite (and a critic, no wonder), calling me a jarhead after stating it's contrary to the universal rules of forum etiquette to "name call"....jarheads are marines btw...they kill people, we rescue people. I was simply trying to point out that I am a real person that has some integrity, whereas Ryan doesn't; I can't help it when he posts insinuating things about my use of this amp and my experiences with it when he is not here, and refuses to admit the facts I post. Not surprising, because he has his own agenda. I just urks me to no end. I had another amp in here, an older SS Sansui that had the same hiss. As I said we USED to have a severe power problem here, so I plan on getting a brand new amp in here. I apologize to Ryan, for being so lost in life, and all the forums members for having to deal with some of my recent "public unhappiness". I will not respond to Ryan in the future, nor will I reomve the statement from my sig; although I have reworded it. thank you again, Your very own ship of fools Coast Guard DR. Cilantro
  10. I guess I'm a tacky tech nightmare.....oh well. You think it's impressive that someone who has the gaul to rip people off will continue to do so, by proving he is "brave" enough to show his face again and again....in a forum??? Geez....I know I am not impressed. I think it's kind of interesting that Ryan has responded to my last few posts offering his "assistance". I take my leave....I highjacked my own thread- is that a first? ugg
  11. Dearest Ryan, "Modern crap" & "DJ gear"...what is the difference between my cd player and my mixer Ryan? The mixer has line output SNR of 100db. And puts out the same volume levels as the cd player. I will go look up the signal voltage. As I said, this amp will hiss at 2:00-3:00 because that's at full output. The low volume hiss that I am hearing is because I am sitting very close to the speaker AND I think there is some kind of RF/EMI thing going on. By now I think everyone knows that I ended up sending this amp to Mr. Osty in MI after getting fed up with Ryan's lack of interest and a deep seated feeling of dissatisfaction. I had heard Craig's name ONCE before in this forum; mentioned next to Ryan's when I first sought a tube tech. I sent the amp to Craig instead of Florida because I deemed MI closer. Craig says he has no hiss on his Lascalas with this amp. MY AMP WAS FIXED & IS WORKING GREAT SINCE I GOT IT FROM CRAIG OSTY. You know I am probably holding back on the output of the mixer...I will check that tomorrow. I have also had power problems in my apt. (lights flashing) in the past so I am going to be taking this amp out of here for testing this week. Maybe I have a bad ground. I know I may sound ignorant at times, but I stand by my claims that you are a liar and cheat. When you get your "business" going, I will be filing a compliant with the Better Business Bureau. I'd really like to see your Engineering degrees explain your ideas regarding the compatability of the Sherwood with grounded gear and "modern crap". Enlighten us...here...please...I honestly want your opinion. I don't buy it, especially when others have told me differently. You can throw out all the technical analysis you want Ryan as you try to show operator error (things are sounding rather good here now that the amp actaully works LOL), but you have lied, cheated, and misrepresented yourself for all to see in the past. Your integrity is shot, and it's wonder you still hang around here; no doubt lurking for newbies. I don't usually play this card- but you are truly a lowlife. My name is Jonathan Catuccio. I am an Operations Specialist Second Class in the United States Coast Guard (currently stationed at Group Portland Maine); enlisted for 3 11/12 years. I stand 12 hour radio watches and work comms on Search & Rescue cases with a SAR Controller & small boat stations. While I may be into some more esoteric things like Jamaican music, amazing cuisine, science-fiction, poetry, and jazz...I still hold close the core values of the USCG - Honor, Respect, & Devotion To Duty. Keep digging Ryan.....it only gets darker. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  12. Thanks! I wonder if the search is case sensitive? Jon
  13. I was trying to find my thread regarding my experience with Ryan Inman. My Experience With A Tube Tech I can't seem to find it; can anyone help...Amy? Jon
  14. I guess I am already getting the upgrade bug. I have a pre-amp so I am just using the AUX on the Sherwood. It sounds great but I have an extra S3000 tuner so I will eventually sell the two together possibly. I also plan I bringing the Sherwood to a friend's house for a test. Still getting the hiss. It's noticable on lower volume levels but mostly because when at the PC I end up sitting right near the speaker, 4ft. I think I have some kind of RF/EMI problem since this amp was tested on some Lascalas and minimal noise was observed. I like to listen to music loud fairly often, when my wife's not home : ) I have a power conditioner but I still have hiss from the horns and a hum on the woofers. I adjusted the bias and fixed an imbalance in the volume and also reduced some hum, but the hiss is still there and rather annoying to me at lower levels. It's the kind of thing, if I had to live with I could but I don't want to and plan to take this amp to another stereo for testing, or bring someone's amp here. What about an ST-70 with a new board from Triodeel.com? DC
  15. Looking for recommendations on a tube power amp, 35-60 watts per channel. Budget is around 500-700$......want to compile a list to research. thanks Jon
  16. Can I use the 4ohm tap with my RF-35's? Someone asked my if I was using the 4 or the 8 ohm tap and I thought I should only be using the 8..... DC
  17. I am hoping some of the knowledgeable folks in here can shed some light on this problem: The cable on the left (and others) on my TT and the new one doesn't; it has locking plugs. I have tested the cable elsewhere and it works fine (on my tapedeck). I can bend the rca's a bit and get one of the channels to come in or barely stick in one and get sound on one side. As I screw down the lock as soon as it gets tight the sound dies on that channel. bizzare.... I checked the cables for continuity and they are okay, and as I said work fine on my tape deck which has "normal" RCA plugs, not like the cheap unshielded jobbie on my TT which I am going to replace with a Cardas box. I can only guess it has something to do with the design of the cheapo phono box reacting with the design of the lcoing-plug cables? My four tonearm wires split into pairs and then run to the each side of the plug. Then there is one wire on each side that sneaks up above the plug and is soldered up top. The blue cable works no problem at all...100% I have a bunch of these Zaolla silver cables and all work great on my mixer as well as tube amp.....but, I did not take another shorter RCA>RCA and try it as the phono cable to see if it caused the same problem. totally bewildered, DC

  19. Hi folks, Bit of an odd thing here since I am new to digital. I have a Denon CDRW1500 dual cd player/recorder and it is hooked up via digital outs to the digital inputs on a NUMARK PPD-9000 digital mixer. I can hear all the sounds like skipping tracks, pause is a loud clicking, etc. I don't remember any of this from analog. I like to make mixes a lot and this could pose a minor problem. I can use the cross fader but sometimes it's nice to have a channel fader raised and ready to "drop" into the outro of another song. note: I can hear thesed artifacts with the volume turned up to a medium level and so on...kind of sucks if you have the music cranked and want to hit pause or skip tracks etc.... Should I get a cleaning kit or something? any takers? thanks DC
  20. Yeah I got a 10 channel Sherwood tube mixer on Ebay for 15$ it has SNR of 130db!!!!! NOT! I am picking up a Numark PPD-9000. I talked to some people who used it and were very impressed. I really needed an all in one solution as I will eventually have 10 sources. I think it should also suffice for archiving vinyl via it's balanced XLR outs to my M-Audio Delta 44 soundcard. It has a Tube Warmth effect which will be interesting to check out and some other features that make it very appealing to me; the tube warmth I could care less about but it reportedly sounds good, even if it ain't the real thing! JC
  21. I do use the pot to adjust, and I am not having a problem with it being too loud; I'll change it when I get my mixer in a few days. I was just wondering why the heck it has so much output; I was kind of impressed. This thing sounds so good, especially NPR which I read does not compress their signal. I picked up an S-2000 which also has AM as well as FM and will test that out next week when it gets here. JOn
  22. My Sherwood S-3000 tube tuner has a volume pot in the back. I keep this at around 2:00 (I THINK). Plugged into the S-5000, the volume gets "loud" with the S-5000 at around 8 o'clock whereas a cd gets "loud" at about 12 o'clock. I mean, this tuner has an amazingly powerful output signal, or is there somthing else going on here that I don't understand; like impedence mis-matching or is this just how they were made back in the day? Jon
  23. Maybe someone could do a rundown of Basie vinyl to look for and some to stay away from; what are some of the exceptionally produced recordings & pressings? My friend says any jazz on Pablo is HOT, and a must get. Jon
