  1. My Almarro 318b arrived and is breaking in as I type. The 6h33c-b is a tremendous tube for high power SE applications, 18 watts is considerable power in single ended circles. There is none of the pesky SE artifacts with this amp; gobs of deep articulate bass, extended highs, rich and toneful midrange, masterful soundstage, the damn thing just sounds so right through the KHorns. Checking bias every couple of hours as they break in, hate for a 6h to melt down with a China Syndrome in eastern KS. Yeah they operate on the flaming side of hot but on a top shelf rack downstairs heat is of no concern and the sound is worth every centigrade, around 275-300. I really believe my rig has come to where further improvements would be marginal. I've said it times before but the room, KHorns/LS and electronics are providing great sound and enjoyment. I'll do my best to download pics tomorrow.

  2. Belles

Not only one the most attractive Heritage models but horn loaded top to bottom. Yep you will lose some lower bass but trade it for a much quicker bass, the entire sound presentation from the Belle is well, better IMO. I've owned both at the same time and the CW always sounded slow, sloppy and reserved in comparison. I actually sent my Crites networks back to Bob thinking something was wrong with the CW after listening to Belles for several months. Networks were just fine it's just the Belle has the quickness, mid range clarity and better projection the CW can't match. Belles and LS have plenty of Good bass with the right amp driving them.

  3. From a couple days ago...

I looked and looked and I could not find a GT PP in white without it being the premium model... which I didn't want. The non-premium Power Package GT's are fairly rare.16996485606_7ff92fd48b_h.jpg

I wanted the car as striped down as possible and the only thing I didn't get was the Recaro seats, but I may just go ahead and order them from the parts dept... we'll see.

I guess I wont be buying speakers anytime soon...

Beautiful car Schu and Orange, my color. Been looking myself at the GT or a 3-4 year old Z06. Own Euro cars/bikes as a rule, currently an Audi S4. Never owned a Ford but the new GT is sharp enough that I can see one in my garage. With the performance package I assume you opted for the manual gear changer?

  4. I thought about it but thankfully my Internet went down last night which allowed me to come to my senses.

Six speaker sets is more than plenty! Anyway a pr. of RB75 on AGon for a BIN of $475 plus shipping. They seem popular here so just passin' this on and, no affiliation.

  5. I agree on the build quality of the Arte Forma 2A3. I had one for a while running the horns on my Jubs. I had many emails back and forth with Norman Yang, the man behind Arte Forma, on the 2A3 and his 845. He is meticulous in his parts selections and build execution. I really liked his 2A3, but I like my own build a little more. Maybe just because I have a lot of time and effort in it. I ended up selling the Arte Forma to a buddy with Jubs who runs the horns with them.

Now on the other end of the SET spectrum, I have been running a Cary 572-3 SET amp that has 20 watts of power. These are on my main 2-channel rig with my DIY three way w/horns. I just like the SET sound. Then I went by Skips house and heard his 845 amps and fell in love. So, the Cary's are being replaced with some ASL 845 (22 watts) amps for my main system.

Wards - was the Arte used with the Jubes on its own? Not bi-amped but used to drive the entire speaker? Did it drive with any authority? You guys with bi- amping and such are on a whole 'nuther level than me. As you may figure from my preference for one box integrateds and for what it's worth I lean more and more to the KISS philosophy.

  6. Wards -

Were it not that the 572's require a preamp I would be interested. I have no desire for the slippery slope that is preamps, I'll take integrated or volume controlled amps, of course that's just me.

To that end I have located a Japanese built Almarro 318 SE integrated designed around the flame throwing 6c33 Russians power triodes. Eighteen watts a side and as most things Japanese Hifi these days superb build. I have owned the Audio Mirror 45 watt 6c33 monos, twice, both with Heritage and the sound with horns is phenominal. The Almarro is 18 Big watts and and worth every centigrade they produce. My rig is now in my recently completed finished basement which is naturally much cooler and on an open rack, just what the 6c33 doctor ordered.

    Thanks all

  7. I sold a pair of LaScalas on Saturday. He paid through PayPal immediately, but PayPal says they will not release the money until April 12th.  I emailed the buyer on Sunday...no response. I emailed on Monday...no response. I emailed today...no response. So I called him. I explained that I would be away later in the week and wanted to agree on a delivery date. He said he would pick them up today. I said, "You know these are in Rochester, New York. You are in New Haven, Connecticut." He said "No, problem. I will call you later with a time." Didn't hear from him for several hours so I texted. He said he would be here this evening and would give me the time shortly. Still have not heard from him.

I am leery of PayPal holding the money until April 12 and releasing the speakers today to someone I do not know. Also, this whole pickup thing is a bit unusual. I just don't like selling to someone I do not know.

Guy sounds like a flake and someone I would not want in my home. I guess paranoid in this crazy world. Good luck and be careful.

With any vehicle sale on CL I meet them at a busy store parking lot, they don't need to see anything but the sale item.

  8. Great answers/info from all - thanks. And much of what I suspected.

I think I will pursue an integrated, I'm an integrated fan, using the big Russian 6c33 power tube for18 big SE watts. Using this tube before on both LS and Cornwalls provided a huge stage, deep yet tight low end, a totally enveloping sound. The downside can be drifting bias until the glass has settled and heat. Extreme heat. But since moving the main rig to a recently finished basement the heat and open equipment rack will be perfect for these miniature reactors.

  9. Thanks for the early replies - the speakers are 23ft apart, I sit 15ft back at the point of the triangle, and there is another 15ft behind me. A rather large finished basement with open rafter 8ft ceilings, partially carpeted. Volumes are moderate+ at best, never really "loud". My current Had KT66/88 SE at 6 and 10 watts really drives them nicely with good bottom, maybe a tad loose but very pleasant. I have tried a 200 watt hybrid, 4x 6922 in the pre section and while it is an excellent amp the KT88 sounds better, fuller at the volumes I listen.

Thanks Joshnich for the Had 45 opinion. I have spoken with Dennis a few times on his new 45 amp/pre design where he says it may well be the most musical he has ever put together and I do not doubt him. But as my question suggests I am very unsure about 2 watts bringing true full range authority even to efficient KHorns although Dennis says they fill a room like 20 watters.

  10. I have done a fair amount of business on AudioGon over the years and I first check condition backed with photos and the sellers feedback history. I usually offer 85% of the asking including shipping. By no means do I consider that a "lowball" offer and more often than not a deal is accepted or one worked very close to those numbers.

  11. Thinking hard on a 2a3 or 45 single ended for the KHorn and/ or LS. For those with experience will these kind of watts drive these speakers Properly and with Authority. Will they dig down with appropriate bass and control? My KHorns have the Fastlane top hat and ALK AP12/5800 extreme slope networks if that makes a difference in and if power to the drivers would be affected. When I owned Belles I remember a friend brought his Sun Audio 2a3 and we both were of the opinion that the sound was very thin, lacking both mid and bottom - all bones, no meat. With that in mind maybe I should know better than to address and even chance it although it seems many are satisfied with the results they get. The 45 would be a Dennis Had custom build and the 2a3 from Arte Forma which looks to sport superior build/ component quality and massive iron which I believe can be the key to the drive a lower powered amp provides.

  12. Max2

I own KHorns with the custom built top hat as you describe. Dave Harris Fastlane audio built the top hat with his 290hz wood horn w/K55 and the Selenium D220 driver w/Selenium baby cheek horn for tweeter. ALK AP12 / ES 5800 network. They sound tremendous but prior to buying these it had been decades since hearing a "OEM" KHorn, so how much of an improvement with a more advanced selection of materials? I have no way of knowing as I imagine an A B test with mine vs. stock will be difficult at best. A couple weeks prior to obtaining the KHorns I bought stock LaScallas which I think sound mighty fine. Different presentation but still mighty fine.

  13. Put your ear up against the grille where the tweeter is to make sure it's working.

Take some recordings you are familiar with to play over the Khorns.  Weigh your response.  The Khorns are very revealing of both music and some kinds of distortion.  Play something soft and something loud.

You will probably want to replace the 25 year caps, although my original set still sounded good after that length of time.  If you don't want to DIY, Crites can do it for a fee.

Yeah, check the tweets for sure. I travelled 500 miles to buy some very nice Belles but the seller was in the middle of a move and I had no opportunity to listen and at the time wasn't aware of how to check the drivers. Get em home fire em up something just wasn't right. No, no it wasn't; both tweets were shot. It is really hard to tell with your ear to the tweet with the big squaker in the same basic location.

Stuff a towel or something similar in the squak horn which will make it easier to identify tweet life.

  14. Among KHorn owners how many keep the top hat attached as normal with screws or leave un-attached for easier access to networks, drivers, wiring, etc.? Is there a downside in not securing the tops? Or securing the top and resting the networks on the top of the top hat? Speakers are in no danger of kids or unauthorized people jostling them.

  15. Looks like I'm a bit late getting in on this thread, more like a blanket than a thread! 336 pages, Jez!

So yeah being off work Friday and Monday rank quite high; I retired in Nov. which ranks highest. Kept busy nearly every day with home projects that were put off and off and off. Now no hurry to get them done and have them lined up and some finished. Upstairs/ hallways painted - finished. Re-grout shower/ new shower doors - finished. Now working on a freshening of the finished basement worthy of my new KHorns. About half way complete. I'll post somes pics when ready. And amongst this are 3-4 mile daily walks when weather allows and riding my MC's whenever possible. My two drugs - hifi and bikes.

Coffee - all day, every day. French press most often, older GE percolater on the weekend and a Bialetti expresso maker for a quick launch. An in-expensive, stove top maker that's really slick and brews a damn nice 1/2 cup or so.

Well back to work, getting ready to shampoo the carpet, then install new baseboards and assemble new equipment rack.

  16. The best mine ever sounded was tucked into corners and 20 feet apart. I also had them on 6 inch risers to get the tweeters up to ear level. The bass especially benefited from the corner placement. It was as big as my K-horns in that position (just didn't go as low).

Agreed - mine sound great in corners about 21-22 feet apart, listening about 15-19 feet back. I first had them toed in directly to the center, where I sat 15 feet away, but that seemed a bit much for me. Those big horns converging at that short distance was too strident to my liking. So I toed them out a few degrees, instead of hitting the center of the couch they were angled to ends of the couch. Probably not more than a 3-4 inch toe to the outside but made a huge difference for me. Much smoother, not in your face and a huge soundstage. Whoever says the LS can't image or presume a soundstage is wrong. But it takes a long back wall sitting several feet back, just like a KHorn.

  17. Thinking about building the Mini-Beast OTL kit from Transcendent Sound. I know several members are well versed in amp building and might weigh in on this. I have zero background in building electronics and although this comes in kit form it of course requires closely following schematics and a good hand at soldering, another area I have very limited experience. Would I be in too deep? Should I avoid this like the plague?

  18. Following AGon far closely I do find some diamonds in the roughand I just found another. If only PWK had been with us long enough he could have put down the slide rule and calculations. At only $129 the answer is (drum roll) --- the WA Quantum speaker chip. Just adhere these to your under performing Klipsch or any ill performing speaker and behold - sonic bliss. I figure I can put several hundred of these on a KHorn and race to the front of the pack. Catch me if you can before I buy 'em up --

Sorry I'm not bright enough to paste the ad from AGon you'll need to surf there on your own. It's well worth the trip.

Yeah it's a cold Sunday and appearently I'm bored
