  4. I'd either upgrade to 5-way binding posts, or just go with bare wire. Bare wire is best so long as you keep the connections clean. The problem is that the copper wire begins to oxidize. Problem solved if you're just using cheap 12 gauge lamp cord...Cut the wire back an inch and strip a clean piece of wire...PRESTO!!
  5. My observation with the Fortes is that they need relatively high-current to tame the woofer. I tried a pair using a Linn Classik (75wpc) and found the Fortes to be lacking in authority. I'm not a rocker (by any stretch of the imagination), but unless your room is on the smaller side of medium, you might be diappointed when it comes time to re-live your youth.
  6. Hey Gary - Thanks so much for the cd. It arrived this weekend and I'm listening to it right now. There's some NICE PICKIN' going on here! Excellent.
  7. So....Is it just me, or are there A LOT of musicians frequenting the Klipsch forum? Perhaps the makings of a new thread. I find it interesting the presence of REAL knowledgable folks frequenting this forum. You don't find this level of knowledge in most "audiophile" circles. Very interesting and highly refreshing. It makes me wonder what specifically attracts so many musicians to Klipsch and Heritage models more specifically. And...fully horn-loaded Heritage models to be even more specific.
  8. If you wanna' try silver cables on the cheap - pick up a pair of DH Labs Silver Sonic (silver plated copper) interconnects for about $40 used. Or for all silver interconnects, try the Homegrown Audio Super Silvers or Silver Lace. They can be found new for $100-200 or used for $50-100. All are excellent and have their place when used appropriately. For example, I like to use a more neutral cable, such as Audioquest Emeralds between my cdp and preamp, but will often use silver between the preamp and a tube amp.

If my math is correct, the low "open B" string on a 5-string bass is around 30.5Hz. A great recording to hear this is the title track to Lyle Lovett's "Road to Ensanada". On many systems, you may not even hear it...or you may perceive it to be an octave higher than it actually is.

  11. Fry's is the biggest piece of crap store. Yeah...they've got everything, but good luck if you have any difficulty with your purchase 'cuz you're SCREWED! They started here in the Bay Area. The founders were the heirs of the Fry's Grocery Store chain. They decided to convert one of the grocery stores into an electronics outlet and the rest is history. Outpost.com used to be my FAVORITE place to shop online (next to amazon.com), but now that they've been acquired by Fry's, I steer clear. The sales staff (hah!) is pathetically inept, and you have to stand in freakin' line for 30 minutes to make your purchase. I don't get it. It's just like Wal-Mart inasmuch as you get s#!tty service from unknowledgable androids and then stand in line praying to God that you bought the right piece of hardware 'cuz heaven forbid you should have to return it you'll be treated like a criminal and may be stuck with your purchase if you didn't save EVERY last piece of packaging and provided their "return policy" hasn't changed in the last 24-hours. Anyway, there was an interesting article in the local throw-away paper about one of the Fry brothers wanting to turn the former Flying Lady into the new Institute For Mathematics. For those not familiar with The Flying Lady, it was a restaurant, airplane museum, car museum, golf course founded by Irv Perch - founder of American Clipper RVs and the "Aristocrat". You'll remember the back of them stated proudly; "You're following an Aristocrat" -Dan
  12. "This was going to be my first time listening to khorns and my first time listening to tubes." Nice read. Very well done. However, I think the above quote (for me at least) causes me to take your comments with the proverbial grain of salt. Hearing tubes and Klipschorns can be a bit of a religious experience...even in a less than optimal setting.
  13. Piranha - Are you buying them? I'll extend this offer to any of you regular contributors in SoCal... I'll be traveling to Irvine on September 6th. If it would be helpful (logistically speaking) I could pick them up for you and deliver them to the Irvine area. All I'd ask is a small reimbursement for my gas from my house to Dutch Flat ($40?).
  14. Dave - I've sent a couple of PMs concerning the final verdict on the Klipschorn veneer.

  16. What is the Belgian Audio Report (in reference to Cornwalls)?
  17. Hey guys, I've been considering the purchase of a subwoofer and began looking at the Klipsch Reference products. First - What the hell is the difference between RW and RSW? I can see that the RSW has a more powerful amplifier. Any other significant differences? I'm not so concerned with maximum SPL. I'm just looking for articulate, tuneful bass that integrates well with the horn-loaded Heritage speakers (ala Belle and LaScala). Thanks!
  18. The OAK KLIPSHORNS are NOT the pair in question. I agree with Dave. A LOT of investigation will be required to determine whether $1,600 is a fair deal. fini - NOPE. I was the proverbial day late and dollar short. Actually, just missed it by one email. They sure did look nice and BOY was the price right. I actually offered MORE than $900 in hopes of securing the deal. For now, the LaScalas that I picked up will have to do. They are quite nice. I'll post some pictures soon. Of course, until the Klipschorns are finally picked up/delivered to their new owner, the LaScalas are living out in the garage! Hey Dave - What was the final verdict on the walnut veneer???
  19. Value can fluctuate pretty widely on Klipschorns. Generally, anywhere between $1,200-3,000 is the standard range. Ask the seller to forward some pictures and a description of the overall condition and post the pics here. I think we can collectively give you a pretty good idea of whether or not it seems like a fair deal. $1,600 (his asking price) is a pretty fair price if they're raw birch in very good condition or a real wood finish in fair to good condition.
  20. Not to hi-jack a thread - but speaking of Klipsch dealers... Some of you may already be aware of this, but I just want to bring some visibility to a Klipsch Heritage dealer right here in Northern California. In fact, they're right in fini's neck of the woods. Take a look - http://www.sonic.net/soundscape/klipsch/klipsch1.htm From what I gather, they're carrying the whole line. Fini...can you verify this? Any experience with this shop?
  21. $400.00!! http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstube&1095783030 It's gonna' go quick. Good deal for somebody local and with a tad bit of know-how! It's in Richmond, Virginia.
  22. Thanks Gary!! My best friend's uncle plays bass with David Grisman (Jimmy Kerwin). Great guys and totally down-to-earth. I'll PM my mailing address. Thanks again! Whoops! Lemme' rephrase that. My best friend's uncle's best friend is Jimmy Kerwin who plays bass with David Grisman. (whew...there's no easy way to phrase that)
