  1. Thanks again, everyone.

Before updating crossovers, I will wait at least another month, minimum.

They sound so good, that I'm actually concerned about doing this....

    Halloween was A BLAST.

THE KIDS ENJOYED CREEPY MUSIC, and I recieved numerous compliments.....

    Thanks all again....

  2. Thank you for the responses again.

I should point out, I have an Emotiva 12" sealed 500w RMS sub. Honestly, it's not needed with these. ( unless listening to HT, explosions, etc). The "Pure Audio" setting on my Reciever bypasses the sub and EQ settings. It's PHENOMENAL for any kind of music.

I had to eq the Heresy 1s plus sub to get what I wanted for music. These EXCEED THAT BY BIG LEAPS.

Based on my research, the Chorus II are more desirable, but I'm just grinning every time I crank ANYTHING.

No DISTORTION. CLEAR. CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IT'S A CONCERT.

Can someone point me to the port mod mentioned? If cheap and easily reversible, might be fun to try....

FWIW, it's been 5 years since I've been on this forum. I hope to reconnect with those of you I knew....

    Thanks so much

  3. Thank you for the responses.

I'll probably get the capacitor kit from Crites in a few weeks. ( or have them do it)....

I've found that for placement, flat against the wall is what I like best so far, but will try the suggestions.

I'm definitely not trying to change everything at once.

These really are the best speakers I've ever owned.

I'm fortunate.... Even the Wife agrees they sound great.

  4. So after a few days of having these.... I'm blown away. They're like Heresy on steroids. Bigger sound stage.... Natural chest thumping bass ( no sub)... I use " pure audio" setting on my reciever now and it's like they DON'T NEED EQ ing....

Besides a crossover recap ( should I? They sound so good now against my re capped Heresy 1 speakers, it's crazy)....

What else can be done to enhance their performance? Best placement? Toed in like Heresy or straight against wall?

    Ideas? Thoughts?

Don't be shy... post what you want, and more importantly how much you would pay.

I will tell you that revamping the PM2.1 and making a high-end 2.0 (powered bookshelves) or 2.1 have been considered MANY times and it all comes down to making the business case.  How much will it cost? Where will it be sold? (i.e. will the retailers take it and put it on the shelf) What will people pay for it? and How many will we sell?

We did it once, it was called the iFi.  My son still uses mine on the gaming computer he built.  I always thought the high end was a little lacking, but I was overruled when it came time for the final EQ.  One of these days, I'm going to take mine apart and re-EQ it... one of these days... when I have time...

We though we had a commitment from one retailer for the iFi, who will remain nameless, but a few months after launch, they cancelled the orders and brought in their own system.  Didn't last much longer after that.

We did it recently with the Stadium, although that's not a computer speaker.

We also have the Jamo P404, and at one point there was the Jamo P102 and the Jamo i300.

None of them have sold in big numbers.  (That is the key)

I've always wanted to take some of the smaller HT sats and put them with a sub, but I've never been able to convince anyone (like the Quintet sats or even the less expensive HD Theater sats).  The XB-10 sats were probably the best sounding sats I can remember and those would have made a KILLER 2.1 setup... but I guess I'm not much of a saelsman. The XB-10's weren't cheap though.  The point of using existing sats is to avoid a lot of tooling costs.  I've pitched it a number of times.  The current version of Quintet speakers would make an excellent little 2.1 system.

P.S. I've been here since the beginning of the PM2.1 and there was never a plan to put an 8" in the sub.

I would think that there is vicious completion in the PC market and many people want to pay less than $200 at Best Buy or the like. E.g., this is made of plastic and can be sold off the shelf of BB and are small compared to the typical monitor (from years ago). Of course you know price points. Maybe $300 is the top of what anyone would pay for a better system in that type of sales situation.

Maybe there is a market for a $500 system. I was looking at RM-14 which are a little large for a "next to the monitor" system but not so large for people running larger screens these days. The smallest Klipsch sub seems to be the SW-110.

The total of those two are $500. However, the buyer would need some sort of amp and USB interface. But my point is that a super PC system could be cobbed together (almost) out of existing components.

    WMcD

    I agree; except one point.....

Gamers will want a pc speaker system they can plug and play; not try to assemble on their own.

Make it sound PHENOMINAL; make it under $300 and make it simple.

"If you build it; they will come"..... (hehe.had to throw that in).

  6. I'm glad to have come across this thread.

I currently run Heresies (3 way) downstairs and RF52's (2 way) upstairs.

I think each has its own strengths; and they both sound really nice.

I was considering KLF 20s or 30s at some point (not exactly easy to find; patience needed).

I'd be interested in your final comparison in a few weeks. If you decide to part with the 30s; I'd be interested; so would many others.

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. I will say that I've owned 2 PM 2.1 sets.

The original set (my ex got them) was really good (~2002?). Its what got me into Klipsch.

The second set was equally good. I happened upon some RF52's cheap (~$70).

I initially paired them with the PM 2.1 amp (mounted in the sub).

WOW what a difference. This was a bedroom PC system btw.....

Soon after; the PM2.1s were sold.

I still have the RF52s; powered by an HK AVR 500 in our Master Bedroom (different house).....

Point of my story.... The PM 2.1s got me started into this.

There are systems by Creative; Logitech; etc at every retailer.

There's so many gaming systems with high end sound cards; etc; you can't design a great sounding speaker system for these pcs?

Why hasn't Klipsch responded; as this will lead to other speaker sales......

You're telling me that a $225 system can't be created that will blow the doors off of the competition?

The amp reliability thing (and volume knob issue) can't be addressed (finally) over 10 years later?

I too am disappointed. I'd buy a set right now for the kids PC if they were available; but the current iteration needs an update and redesign.

Klipsch; I love your products.... get with it.

  8. Bryan,

    Welcome to the forum.

I believe you can acquire another control pod on Ebay for ~$20.

I suspect your issue lies there. (Maybe the solder on the headphone jack is cold soldered or cracked?)

My only other thought is maybe the DIN plug itself could be contributing. The next time it happens; gently wiggle the plug and see if it clears immediately.

    If so; there's your culprit.

I am no expert, but have replaced the DIN plug on my pod of my now retired PM 2.1s; similar symptoms.

(Retired them for RF 52s in the Bedroom).

    Good Luck.

  9. MIT, Welcome to The Forum.

I can tell you; Klipsch customer service has always bent over backwards to help me.

They looked up drawings and manuals on a set of KG 5.2 speakers when I was unsure how to remove the plastic rings on the woofer; to recone myself.

That's pretty unheard of where I come from. (Sony will tell you send your PS3 in for $150 to repair it; not assist you with disassembly).

I suggest giving a CSR a second chance as mentioned; and escalate to a Manager if necessary.

    Good Luck.

  10. Congrats.

Nice to see your persistance has yielded dividends.

I had a set of the KG 5.2s. They were capable of incredible volume; they could knock things off shelves.

They could do this while still sounding clear and were GREAT speakers. I sold them in favor of my Heresy Is; and miss them, but would make the same choice in a heartbeat.

I have a set of RF 52s in the bedroom that are capable in their own right.

( They replaced Promedia 2.1s; and are like Promedia 2.1s X10 on the soundstage).

Enjoy the fruits of your efforts; and thanks for sharing!

  11. I have two listening modes. Passive and active. In the passive mode I pipe whatever I’m listening to throughout the house and go about whatever it is I’m doing. My house is wired with 5 or 6 pairs of speakers. A few JBL in-walls and some other unremarkable pairs. In this mode I’m really not listening but rather just want some background noise. More often than not the source of this “noise” is Pandora. From time to time I’ll listen to the local FM station. I rarely delve in to my collection of CDs or FLACs in passive mode. I have taken this mode to the point where I’ve set up a secondary amplifier and speakers in the main stereo. This is to keep hours off of the tube amp if I’m not “actively” listening to it.

And then there’s “active” mode. As a rule I’ve been thinking about a play list most of the day. I’ll gather all of the music, usually vinyl and CDs and then it becomes an almost “religious” ritual. I turn off the VOIP phone and my cell phone. The tube amp and CD player both need around an hour of warm up before they’re at their best so I power everything up and play Pandora or FM for a while. When all is right with the world I’ll pour myself the beverage du jour usually a nice craft beer or a glass of merlot, occasionally a good single malt and settle in to listen.

I don’t have the luxury of a dedicated listening space so I’m sitting on my living room couch with my feet up about 14 feet from my Cornscalas. I put on whatever the sources is, take the lighting down to a bare minimum and sit back and enjoy. These sessions range from an hour or so (1 album) to 4 or 5 hours. For reference (and I've measured) my passive listening tends to be around 80Db but my active listening tends to be a bit higher at 90 to 95Db.

One of my more interesting observations about these listening sessions is that I sleep MUCH better following one. I tend to not sleep all that well most of the time but the nights after an “active” listening session I sleep very soundly and usually longer than I should. I related this anomaly to a friend of mine who’s a doctor and she attributes the difference to a state of much deeper relaxation before going to bed. Me… I think it’s the couple (or more) of glasses of wine. All I know is after a 2 or 3 hour pure listening session I sleep like a baby.

For me great music and a bit of alcohol is much more effective than any sleep medication I have ever tried and I've tried a bunch of them.

I have a completely different setup, but there are similarities........

I always sleep better after listening.

Sometimes I can sleep while listening. Many times my lady comes home to find me asleep on the couch.......

This is because I can put all the work stress on the side and just LISTEN.

The other difference (besides equipment; etc) Is I do not drink alcohol anymore.

(It's ok; to each his own).

Music is a big deal to me, and I would go nuts without it........

  12. Duff,

I do not know about that Realistic amp. Some of Rat Shacks older stuff is actually pretty good.

I still have not made the jump to a seperate amp for my H Is, but my HK AVR 7300 is rated at 110wpc.

(I believe in 2 channel mode that jumps even higher). It weighs 60 pounds......

I would check into the above mentioned names, NAD, Cambridge, Denon, etc..... maybe even an HK 2 channel amp (HK 870 is it? I forget)......

Being so far away definitely hurts; Ebay may be your friend.

    Good Luck.

  13. So, I have this hooked up to my HK 430 Twin, and Klipsch KG 2 speakers.

It is amazing how much variance there is in the sound.

Some records sound really bad. (In particular, "The Last In Line", By Ronnie James Dio).

Others sound as good as their FLAC counterparts. (Slightly warmer, but sound really great).

Keep in mind, this is a set of Klipsch KG 2s, HK 430 (Turntable) being compared to a set of Klipsch Heresy Is, HK AVR 7300 (FLAC).

I need a phono preamp if I want this to go with my AVR 7300.......

Anyway.... Thanks to all...... This is definitely interesting.....

(Yeah, I can see myself wanting something Audiophile Quality eventually).......

  14. The owner purchased this new back in the day, and I believe him when he says it was used maybe 5 times

Perfect! That sounds like a great find. Low use, vintage table from the original owner.

This should be just right to find out what the fuss is all about.

Just think of it as a gateway drug!

    Congrats!

    Thanks!

Yeah, I am excited also! It may wind up leading me to spend $400 or more, but I believe this is a decent starter.

It is way better than the current low end offerings, so we shall see!

I saw a beautiful Marantz TT going for $365 on CL, but this would have to be down the road.

  15. Cask, Thanks for the attatchment.

To all, thanks for your opinions and input.

I did buy this Garrard, wound up being cheaper than I thought..... Can not complain about that!

It has a pickering cartridge and needle.

The owner purchased this new back in the day, and I believe him when he says it was used maybe 5 times.

I still need vinyl, but this thing is mint; and holds speed perfectly. (I checked for accuracy with a tach).

We shall see how it sounds...... Thanks to all again........ [Y]

  16. Ona,

Don't take this the wrong way, but I am glad we are in the same boat..... [:D]

Indeed, a $400 commitment is not feasible for me either; especially when I may just decide I want to stick with FLAC, High Quality MP3s or CDs....

I am tenatively scheduled to pick this model TT up tomorrow. It is from the early '80s and looks mint.

    Hoping someone chimes in soon.......

  17. This is a Garrard DDQ550 TT.

Is this a decent TT for $80-$100 or steer me in a better direction please.

I have read that DD is frowned upon......

I want something in nice shape; good quality and under $80-$100......

I know that is asking a lot; especially because most Audiophile TTs can be way more expensive.....

    Thoughts?
